The high temperature in Dallas-Fort Worth may drop below 100 this week. Here’s when

Dallas may have a short reprieve from the weeks-long heat wave Tuesday before temperatures warm back up to triple digits.

A cold front moving through North Texas during the day Monday will bring cooler temperatures, according to the National Weather Service.

The heat in Dallas could break a record before the cooler temperatures arrive, according to the KXAS-TV (NBC5) forecast. Sunday’s high is forecast to be 106, slightly warmer than the previous Aug. 13 record high of 105 set in 1951.

The weather service issued an excessive heat warning for all of North Texas that expires at 8 p.m. Sunday as the heat index in some places could rise to 111.

As of Saturday, Dallas-Fort Worth had a 20-day streak of triple-digit temperatures, one of the longest streaks in recorded weather history. The summers of 1954 and 2011 also had 20-day streaks.

If Sunday’s temperatures rise above 100 degrees as expected, the current run of consecutive 100-degree-or-hotter days will be tied for sixth-longest streak with a record of 21 days set last summer.

The longest streak of triple-digit days was a 42 in 1980, according to weather service data.

This year’s current stretch of 100-degree days may end Monday but will more likely tap out in the 90s on Tuesday. Some forecasts have Dallas’ temperatures rising to 102 Monday while the weather service predicted the high to be 98 at DFW Airport.

Either way, the relief is expected to be brief.

High temperatures in Dallas are forecast to rise back to 100 degrees Wednesday with 106 predicted to be the high Thursday and Friday.

There also remains an elevated threat of fires across the region, as there has also been very little rain in the last few weeks.

ERCOT, the grid operator for majority of Texas, said it’s expected to continue operating under normal conditions as it has all summer but issued a weather watch through Friday.

The grid has repeated peaked at new demand highs this summer, including as recently as last Thursday when demand rose to 85,435 megawatts, ERCOT data shows.
