APPLICATIONS CLOSE SEPTEMBER 30

DALLAS, Sept. 17, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Time is running out to apply to participate in the Mark Cuban Foundation Artificial Intelligence (AI) Bootcamp hosted by the Dallas Mavericks in Dallas at Mavs HQ. Applications for the no-cost bootcamp are closing September 30.

The Mark Cuban Foundation, in partnership with the Mavericks, is bringing the only artificial intelligence (AI) camp of its kind, free of charge, to high school students locally. With a custom and highly-relevant curriculum focused on teaching students about the latest developments in the world of AI and Generative AI, the camp will provide the tools to make these technologies work for them and promises to educate, inspire and fuel the next generation of AI professionals.

The program aims to provide students with a foundational understanding of artificial intelligence and its applications to future careers. Students can select from six tracks: healthcare, arts and entertainment, business and entrepreneurship, computer science, sports science, or education and career readiness. Driven by the belief that fostering interest in AI at a young age is crucial for preparing the next generation for their future, the AI Bootcamps are introductory and accessible to students in 9-12 grade with an interest in technology. Students do not need any familiarity with computer science or programming to attend.

This free AI Bootcamp is hosted for underserved high school students with a transparent focus on recruiting girls, students of color, first generation college students, and those from low to moderate income households. The AI Bootcamp Program provides students with lunch and a snack, transportation assistance, and technology equipment during bootcamp.

“As AI continues to become an undeniable force in all of our lives, it’s crucial that we open the door to this knowledge, especially to young people who want to explore it,” said Mark Cuban, founder. “While technology expands and becomes more advanced, it becomes more critical that we ensure our students are prepared when they apply for schools or jobs in the future. Thanks to our work with the Mavs, the bootcamp will offer an avenue to explore this fascinating field of technology to any student, no matter their means.”

This year’s bootcamp, taking place in Dallas on November 2nd, 9th, and 16th is hosted and staffed by Mavericks front office employee volunteers specializing in IT and analytics, along with special appearances by the Mavericks entertainment team, the Mavs ManiAACs.

The Dallas Mavericks are one of 30+ host companies selected to host camps across the US.

Dallas has to get urgent about pedestrian safety

Dallas is not a city for pedestrians. High speed limits, few decent street crossings and long stretches without a sidewalk in sight. Crossing the street should not be a life-or-death situation, but too often it feels that way.

The city has a long-term plan that is already making an impact but is moving in slow motion. Officials still need to bring pedestrian safety to the forefront.

In 2023, there were 71 fatal crashes involving pedestrians and 198 crashes with severe injuries involving pedestrians, according to the city’s Vision Zero Dashboard. Vision Zero is an ambitious plan to reduce traffic fatalities and severe injury crashes by 50% by 2030, including pedestrian accidents.

Vision Zero has already identified the most dangerous intersections for pedestrians in Dallas, with the top spot going to Maple Avenue, between Oak Lawn Avenue and Hudnall Street. A safety plan that includes bike lanes and enhanced pedestrian crossings was presented in late July and has been given priority by the city.

Another effective way to reduce pedestrian deaths and injuries is by reducing speed limits. There is a correlation between speed limits and fatality rates with pedestrians, studies show, even by reducing 5 miles per hour. This is the spirit of a new ordinance for the East Ledbetter corridor, which is part of Loop 12. That stretch of road, according to a Texas Department of Transportation analysis and highlighted by KXAS-TV (NBC5), is the deadliest roadway for traffic crashes.

Redesigning portions of Loop 12 to slow down cars is part of a larger multiagency plan, Michael Morris, director of Transportation at the North Central Texas Council of Governments, told NBC5.

NTCOG is presenting a legislative plan for the region to enhance street safety, including automated speed enforcement over 90 mph and measures that improve bicycle and pedestrian safety focusing on areas with pedestrian movements.

Dallas also has ambitious projects for traffic safety that are waiting for bond money to kick in. However, completion dates in some cases are expected for 2027. With the information the city already has from Vision Zero, officials should consider repurposing funds to give priority to some of these projects.

Meanwhile, adding pedestrian crossings is relatively inexpensive and yet effective. Dallas City Council member Chad West told us some parts of his district, in north Oak Cliff, are using reflective delineators — bright traffic poles — that have been effective in reducing traffic speeds.

West, along with council member Jesse Moreno, started the Street Design Manual Work Group last year to review the city’s current Street Design Manual and to consider how to incorporate Vision Zero with other citywide initiatives. A report is expected by the end of this year.

Getting these plans into action takes time, but the city has enough information on the table to take immediate action in some high-risk areas with an added sense of urgency.

So far this year, there have been 48 pedestrian deaths and 107 severe injuries. These numbers are proof that there is much work to be done.

Diamond Dallas Page Calls This WWE Personality The Greatest Character In Wrestling – Wrestling Inc.

Diamond Dallas Page is a professional wrestling veteran who’s watched many personalities throughout the years. However, while he’s a big fan of modern stars like Sami Zayn and Cody Rhodes, he believes the best character around at the moment is someone he worked with in WCW early on in his career.

“Who’s better than Paul Heyman? I mean, really,” DDP said on the “Drinks with Johnny” podcast. “I think the greatest character in professional wrestling right now is Paul Heyman.”

DDP has been impressed with Heyman’s work with The Bloodline, where he’s served as the “Wiseman” to Roman Reigns’ “Tribal Chief.” However, he believes that Heyman is destined to form a faction or faux company of his own someday.

“I’m going to predict something — this is totally off the wall… Paul Heyman gets fired [in storyline] and starts his own, can’t call it ECW anymore, but whatever the hell the name of it is and goes into opposition with WWE.”

It remains to be seen when Heyman will return to WWE television, as he’s been missing since The Bloodline powerbombed him through a table on the June 28 episode of “SmackDown.” The personality will undoubtedly be aligned with Roman Reigns when he returns to action, which should allow him to showcase more of the great character work that DDP — and many wrestling fans — have grown fond of.
