How was preseason week 1?

The Seahawks won their first preseason game over the Minnesota Vikings, but the Cowboys lost their opening game to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Let’s assess a bit.

Seahawks Week 1

Pete Carroll held most of the starters last week (which may mean we’ll see some tonight, but he’s declined to say as of yet). Still, they had an impressive defensive showing, holding the Vikings to just 83 rushing yards and an average of 3.2 yards per carry.

Another positive note for Seattle is the performance of their backup quarterback, Drew Lock. In his first time taking the field for the Seahawks, he threw two touchdown passes.

Cowboys Week 1

The Cowboys had a few positives and a few notes of concern/places of improvement to take away from their loss to the Jaguars. One point of improvement is on the Dallas o-line, which was inconsistent and sloppy in Week 1. Perhaps more worrying was the defense. I’ll note that the Cowboys were playing their backups and the Jaguars their starters for much of the game, but still, the Cowboys boast quite a bit of depth on defense. And yet, the pass rush was unimpressive, not a single sack recorded in the game.

One positive is at receiver. Both tight end and wide receiver positions look to have much more promising depth than last year. TE John Stephens led, catching five of seven targets and one touchdown. On top of that, Jalen Tolbert and Simi Fehoko both looked way better than last season. And of course, we must mention running back Deuce Vaughn, the small but fierce rookie out of Kansas State. He led the team in rush yards (50) and notched a touchdown in his debut.
