Toll road rates are spiking in Central Texas. Here's where.
The rates on U.S. 183, U.S. 183A, Highway 290, State Highway 71, and State Highway 45 lanes are rising by nearly 4%, which means drivers will be expected to pay between 2 and 5 cents more per trip, according to KVUE. Officials who spoke to KVUE say the rates are increasing in order to stay consistent with inflation.
But there is good news for some loyal toll road takers. Drivers using electronic tags on their vehicles will continue to save money, which tends to be about 50% less in costs than those who choose to pay by mail.
Drivers who use the MoPac express lane in Austin will also see an increase of 7 cents to the base cost of a trip per single segment, or 14 cents on a full-length trip, according to KVUE. This is not the first time Austin has seen new changes to its roadways. In December, the City of Austin announced its plan for an $800 million revamp of I-35 as part of its Cap and Stitch Program.
