SafeHomes forced to replace annual fundraiser because of Hurricane Helene
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – SafeHomes says it is unable to host its largest annual fundraiser, Fake It to Make It, because of the impact of Hurricane Helene.
The nonprofit provides emergency shelter, legal advocacy, counseling, support groups, and job training to victims of domestic violence.
Columbia County has 2 students and a teacher on state superintendent advisory councils
SafeHomes says they will be raffling tickets to Night One of the Kicks 99 Guitar Pull in place of the normal fundraiser.
Every $50 donation will result in a raffle entry. The drawing will take place on Monday at noon on Facebook Live.

Congressman Buddy Carter reacts to former President Trump’s win
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – We’re hearing from local officials now, reacting to the news of former President Donald Trump’s re-election.
Georgia’s First Congressional District will remain red after Congressman Buddy Carter won again.
The congressman is not only excited for his own win, but for Trump’s as well, he told WTOC he believes this is a huge step in the right direction.
“I think it’s great for the country. I think that he’s going to get us back on track. I think he’s going to get our economy back on track. I think he’s going to secure our border. We’ll be well-respected on the world stage. We’ll get crime down in our cities. Donald Trump gets it,” said Congressman Carter.
The presidential inauguration will be held January 20, 2025.

Roundup of sheriff races across the CSRA on Election Day
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Across the CSRA, there are several sheriff races happening on Tuesday. Voters get to decide who will win.
Here’s a list of sheriff races across the two-state.
Aiken County
- Republican Marty Sawyer won the Aiken County sheriff’s race against Democrat Lucas Grant. As of Wednesday morning, Sawyer received 63.3% of votes over Grant’s 36.7%.
Burke County
- Incumbent Democrat Alfonzo Williams and Republican Brad Capitosti are fighting for the seat. We are still waiting for results on this race.
Jefferson County
- Democrat Gary Hutchins won the Jefferson County sheriff’s race over Republican Colby Harrell. As of 9:50 p.m., Hutchins had received 74.3% of votes while Harrell had received 25.7% of votes.
McCormick County
- Republican Chad Cox won the title of McCormick County sheriff over Democrat Tim Kelly. As of 9:05 p.m., Cox had received 63.3% of votes over Kelly’s 36.7%.
Screven County
- Republican Norman Royal and Democrat Mike Kile go head-to-head for the sheriff’s seat. We are still waiting for results on this race.
Wilkes County
- Republican Darrell Powers won the Wilkes County sheriff’s race against Democrat Detric Jones. As of 9:42 p.m., Powers had received 52.4% of votes compared to Jones’ 47.6%.
