Local runners compete in return of Augusta Half Marathon
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Everyone’s favorite past time returned this weekend, not baseball – but running in the Augusta Half Marathon.
Downtown was full of runners Saturday morning.
For the past 16 years, the Augusta Sports Council has hosted the half marathon.
Athletes also had the chance to compete in a 5 and 10k too.
The course started at the commons and worked its way through Summerville and Lake Olmstead before coming to an end right where the race started.
Winning runners of both the mens and women’s division were each awarded a check: Jacob Burgamy and Laura Matthews walked away 500 dollars richer.
Laura Matthews said, “The fourth mile is like straight up hill the whole miles up hill and then even coming back there are a bunch of hills that you’re not expecting just little punchy hills that really hurt.”
“I mean this is a great race a great event I guess the sports council does a great job with it was like hey, why not run it? Oh, but yeah, they did a great job putting it on and it was fine the hills were rough, but it’s a really fun event. I can’t wait to be back next year,” Jacob Burgamy said.
The name Burgamy name may sound familiar, he’s also the coach of Augusta University’s cross country and track and field teams.
