Augusta hotel squatter arrested, accused of shooting worker

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – An Augusta hotel shooting led to the arrest of a 31-year-old man, according to the incident report from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

On July 6, around 11:44 a.m., deputies responded to Motel 6, 201 Boy Scout Road, for a 41-year-old man with a gunshot wound, according to the incident report from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

The witness said the victim worked at the hotel and would go into vacant rooms to ensure no one was “squatting in the room.”

When they got to room 233 and opened it, they found Darren Rogers inside smoking, the report states.

Officials say Rogers was trespassing due to not renting the room.

Rogers was told to leave, and as he left, he started arguing with the victim, according to the report.

This is when the suspect allegedly hit the victim and pulled out a knife before the two wrestled over the knife.

After the knife was dropped, Rogers allegedly pulled out a gun and the two started fighting over it. The gun went off and the victim was shot in the stomach.

The witness picked up the knife that was dropped and started stabbing the suspect in an attempt to get him to drop the gun. After being stabbed, the two were still fighting over the gun, when another witness came up and tackled the suspect.

Officials say the gun fell to the ground and Roger ran towards I-20. The second witness tackled the suspect to the grass near the exit ramp before deputies arrived.

The report states Rogers was taken into custody and transported to the hospital for the stab wound.

Rogers was booked into the Charles B. Webster Detention Center on Wednesday and charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm or knife during a crime.

Georgia Lt. Gov candidate Rep. David Clark visits Augusta

Georgia Lt. Gov candidate state Rep. David Clark made a stop in Augusta Saturday. He says that some of his priorities if he wins include expanding school choice, eliminating the state income and property taxes, and reaching out to younger voters.

Clark is also an Army veteran, who served overseas. He hopes to represent all Georgians.

“Before politics and parties we’re Americans, we’re Georgians. That’s the biggest thing. People want someone who stands up and listens to people,” said Clark.

“I’m not saying we’re always going to agree, but in the end—we’re the American family, we’re the Georgian family.”
