AUGUSTA, Ga (WFXG) – The Georgia Cancer Center Hosted its 6th Annual Unite In the Fight Against Cancer Walk. 

There are plenty of events that focus on one type of cancer but this event focuses on all types. People gathered at Georgia’s Cancer Center for this walk. The center created this signature event back in 2018 

Georgia’s Cancer Center Director, Jorge Cortez says the best way to keep people active is by walking.

“We want to raise awareness about prevention. Even physical activities help decrease the risk of cancer.” Said, Cortez.

The walk was 1.5 miles long and it is used to bring attention to all 28 types of cancers, that are treated by the Georgia Cancer Center’s multidisciplinary teams. 

Not only were cancer survivors honored but some walked in memory of their loved ones who passed away. 

Justin Dock aka “Deloach” is a professional boxer from Augusta. He says it’s important to support those in the community. 

“A lot of people need that support. Especially those who are fighting…” Said, Dock.

Shagofe Woelzlein was diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer in 2018. She says it’s important to stay positive.

“That’s what you have to do. It’s not easy button day at a time, you can do it.” Said, Woelzlein

Former Augusta Mayor, Deke Copenhaver also participated in this walk. He says that he is helping the fight to cure cancer.

“Cancer impacts e I know. I don’t know anyone who hasn’t been affected by it. It’s so important for us to pull together as a community.” Said, Mayor Copenhaver

Mayor Copenhaver is battling Esophageal cancer.

“Obviously, I have cancer myself now…I’m in the fight with you. We’re all in this together and we will beat this together.” Said, Copenhaver.

After completing the walk, walkers celebrated with those around them.
