At least 66 people die after a truck plunges into a river in southern Ethiopia
At least 66 people have died after a truck plunged into a river in southern Ethiopia, a hospital director said Monday.
The accident took place Sunday when an old, overcrowded truck that was contracted by wedding guests fell off the Gelan Bridge, where villagers said traffic crashes have happened before.
IN ETHIOPIA, AT LEAST 183 KILLED IN 2 MONTHS DUE TO CONFLICT IN AMHARA REGION, UN SAYS
The medical director at Bona General Hospital in the southern Sidama region, Lemma Lagide, told The Associated Press on Monday that 64 people died on site and two others at the hospital.
He said those patients in need of more sophisticated critical care were transferred to a bigger hospital in Hawassa.
Delays in rescue efforts in the remote village were blamed for the high number of casualties. Villagers said they tried to save people from the raging river only with sticks.
A villager, Serak Boko, told AP that moments before the accident, music was blasting out of the truck and people dressed in suits were dancing and waving.
It is common for people in rural Ethiopia to hire trucks instead of buses to transport them to social events like weddings because they are more affordable and carry many people. Most of those on the truck were men because they are culturally required to escort the bride from her home to the groom’s house.

“The area always has regular accidents around the river as it is poorly constructed,” said resident Fasil Atara, referring to the road lacking bumps and warnings.
With desolate infrastructure and overcrowded public transportation, Ethiopia has had similar accidents in the past. In August, 38 people died after a bus rolled over in Amhara region.

Dallas Fire-Rescue sends 6 firefighters to assist with California wildfire response
Dallas Fire-Rescue has deployed six personnel to assist with ongoing wildland fire response efforts in California.
On Saturday morning, a Type 3 fire engine staffed with four wildland firefighters, part of a strike team composed of resources from across the state, headed to Los Angeles County, according to a news release. Two Dallas Fire-Rescue members will also join the Emergency Medical Task Force to provide essential medical support for the firefighting crews.
The strike team will assist in high-priority areas where their efforts can have the most significant impact.
“We stand in solidarity with the teams of firefighters working to protect lives and property,” said Dallas Fire Rescue interim chief Justin Ball. “Dallas Fire Rescue Department is always ready to step in to support our fellow firefighters, especially in these extremely challenging conditions.”
Wildland firefighters, including those from Dallas Fire-Rescue, are specially trained in wildfire suppression and capable of tackling fires in challenging and hazardous environments, such as steep terrain and high temperatures, the news release states.
The deployments are expected to last up to 14 days, with the possibility of extension based on operational needs and ground conditions in Los Angeles County.
Dallas Fire-Rescue will collaborate with other strike teams, which include personnel from Parker County, Greenville, Allen, Frisco and McKinney, the news release states.

Video: Carson Beck, Girlfriend Hanna Cavinder Hype Miami Transfer with TikTok Dance

Miami fans will have to wait a while to see quarterback Carson Beck on a football field, but the Hurricanes’ newest transfer is already making his impact felt in the content game.
Beck and girlfriend Hanna Cavinder, a guard on Miami’s basketball team, celebrated his arrival in South Florida in a video she posted to TikTok:
Having spent the last four years at Georgia, Beck was eligible to enter the 2025 NFL draft, and he was generally expected to test the pro waters. He was the No. 37 overall prospect on Bleacher Report’s 2025 big board that was posted on Jan. 2.
Instead, the experienced signal-caller will suit up for Miami next season.
In addition to the fact his girlfriend is already a student there, CBS Sports’ John Talty and Chris Hummer reported Beck is expected to collect $4 million in total NIL money with the transfer.
For some perspective, Caleb Williams has a $795,000 base salary from his rookie deal with the Chicago Bears. As the No. 1 overall pick in 2024, he also received a $25.5 million signing bonus.
The payouts dropped precipitously as you get further down the first round. Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr., who was picked 23rd overall, got a $7.5 million signing bonus.
Getting $4 million to play another year of college ball and potentially improving your draft stock in the process could be a shrewd decision.
Beck had a somewhat underwhelming final year at Georgia. In 13 games, he threw for 3,485 yards, 28 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
Cam Ward parlayed his one year with Miami into becoming one of the top QBs in the 2025 draft, so maybe Beck could be on a similar trajectory.

NBA postpones Houston Rockets v Atlanta Hawks game for winter storm
The game between the Houston Rockets and Atlanta Hawks scheduled for Saturday has been postponed because of a winter storm.
The NBA said the decision was made “to prioritize the safety of the players, fans and staff due to the severe weather and hazardous icy conditions in the Atlanta area”.
The league said a date for a rescheduled game will be announced at a later time. The Rockets’ team flight arrived in Atlanta before the postponement was announced.
A winter storm dumped snow and ice on the Atlanta area Friday and roads were expected to refreeze Saturday night.
Power outage numbers around Atlanta crept up Friday night as falling trees on power lines became a widespread issue. More than 110,000 customers were without electricity, mostly in the Atlanta area.
On Friday, four passengers were injured after a Delta Air Lines jet bound for Minneapolis aborted its takeoff. Delta spokesperson Morgan Durrant said the plane experienced an engine problem.
While the issue happened during the snowstorm that caused widespread cancellations and delays in Atlanta – the world’s busiest airport – officials couldn’t say if the problem was related to the weather.
The 201 passengers, two pilots and five flight attendants aboard evacuated the Boeing 757-300 using inflatable slides and were bused back to a concourse. One of the injured passengers was taken to a hospital, while three were treated at the airport for minor injuries.
