Watch Arkansas State player console Butch Jones during 73-0 beatdown by Oklahoma
It was a rough day for Butch Jones.
The Arkansas State coach, who had worked with Nick Saban at Alabama since 2018, could just sit there and watch as Oklahoma just hammered away at his Red Wolves 73-0. As things were winding down Saturday, and with Jones looking visibly shaken, Arkansas State safety Justin Parks came over to comfort his coach in what became a trending moment on social media.
Jones mentioned the moment during his post-game press conference.
“There’s a lot of players on our team that care,” Jones said.
Dillon Gabriel completed 19 of 22 passes for 308 yards and two touchdowns in the first half and No. 20 Oklahoma blanked Arkansas State. Oklahoma freshman Jackson Arnold played most of the second half on Saturday. The five-star recruit completed all 11 of his passes for 114 yards and a touchdown and ran for 39 yards and another score.
Freshman Jaquaize Pettaway had nine catches for 56 yards, walk-on Tawee Walker ran for the first two touchdowns of his career and Gavin Freeman scored twice for the Sooners. It was Oklahoma’s first shutout under second-year coach Brent Venables.
Arkansas State committed 14 penalties for 111 yards.
“I know the caliber of football team that we played is very, very good,” Jones said. “But we still talk about playing to a standard, and we did not play to a high level to a standard of performance that we talk about. And so all we can do is learn from it.”
