Arkansas residents who participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, will see their payments for September starting in three days.

SNAP, or food stamps, helps low-income families and households buy healthy groceries for the month. In Arkansas, SNAP is distributed from Sept. 4 to 13, according to the program’s fiscal year schedule, which kicked in on Oct. 1, 2022, and goes to Sept. 30, 2023. The exact day recipients will be given their benefits is dependent upon an applicant’s Social Security number.

The benefit amount individuals receive from SNAP depends on household size requirements, income requirements, and other eligibility criteria. The average payment per household member per month in Arkansas is $170. For a household of one, the maximum benefit amount is $281, and for a household of four, the maximum amount is $939. A household of eight can receive a maximum of $1,691, and for every additional member after eight, SNAP adds up to $211.

Arkansas SNAP payments are loaded onto a recipient’s electronic benefits transfer card each month. The funds can be used on groceries at participating grocery stores, farmers markets, and some online retailers. Food products like bread, dairy products, meat and poultry, and drink items can all be purchased through SNAP. Pet food, alcohol, and household items such as soap and paper products are ineligible.
