Pike Road family gets pictures in all 67 Alabama counties, plus a bonus!


PIKE ROAD, Ala. (WSFA)— It started off with a simple picture taken while on a day trip to visit family. Five years later, one Pike Road family has quite a collection, and a memory they won’t forget.

“We were in Elmore County visiting my grandmother,” said Matthew Roberts. “We stopped by the courthouse, I’m not sure why. I got a picture of them sitting outside and I said, ‘Hey, why don’t we go to all 67 counties?’”

“He decided to take his idea and run with it,” said Jessica Roberts, Matthew’s wife. “So, we got to see the whole state.”

After the trip to Elmore County, the Roberts family started knocking out visits one county at a time.

“It’s so beautiful,” said Jessica. “We have the mountains and The Shoals in north Alabama and the beaches down south. We really have it all here.”

The kids had their favorites.

“I like Winston County because there was an Addison there,” said 7th grader Addison Roberts. “I was younger and thought that was cool.”

“I really like Marshall County,” said 5th grader Marshall Roberts.

Sure, it helps to have counties and cities they share names with, but mom says they saw all kinds of cool stuff.

“We did some of the 13 Alabama ghost places, we saw a giant oak tree in Geneva County, and we saw the unclaimed baggage in Scottsboro.,” said Jessica. “If there’s a tourist attraction in Alabama, we’ve done it and seen it.”

“I hope they learned a little more about seeing places and getting out of where your roots are and just seeing the great state of Alabama,” said Matthew.

With all 67 counties knocked out, they still needed one more picture.

“Our end goal was to meet the governor,” said Matthew.

Five years ago the Roberts family took a trip to Elmore County and got a picture by the courthouse. It led to a mission to get a picture in every county in Alabama and one final picture with the governor.(WSFA)

So, we made it happen. Gov. Ivey was nice enough to spend some time with the Roberts family and check out their Alabama scrapbook.

“It was really cool we got to meet her,” said Addison.

So, five years, 67 counties, and a bonus picture with the governor is quite a journey.

“They may think their parents are dorks now,” said Jessica. “But, maybe one day they will look back when they have kids and take them to all 67 counties.”

Up next, the family says it may work on trying to visit all the state capitals.

A dominant win with a potential loss for Nebraska women’s basketball Tuesday evening.

No. 21 Nebraska hammered North Alabama 85-48 at Pinnacle Bank Arena. The Huskers improve to 5-0 while the Lions fall to 2-3.

NU led by 11 after the first quarter and inched that out to 13 midway through the second. That’s when disaster struck.

A turnover led to a fast break opportunity for North Alabama. Natalie Potts retreated to cut off the scoring chance, but when she turned to contest the shot, her knee gave way and she collapsed to the floor. She was eventually helped to the locker room as a number of teammates were visibly emotional.

“She’s pretty upset,” Nebraska coach Amy Williams said after the game. “Her teammates are pretty upset. We’ll just kind of wait and see, once she’s had a chance to be evaluated, where we go from here.”

Potts returned in the second half to sit behind the bench in street clothes, aided by crutches. Williams said the doctors did not make an immediate determination of how long Potts will be out.

Back on the court, Nebraska continued to pull away, leading by as much as 39 before settling for the 37-point difference.

Nebraska shot 48.4% for the game, making 8-of-21 3s. North Alabama managed to shoot at just a 28.8% clip, including 7-of-18 from deep.

Five Huskers scored in double figures, including Callin Hake with a game-high 17 points. Jessica Petrie was next with 14 points, while Britt Prince and Alberte Rimdal each added 13.

Alabama Community College Conference adds women’s flag football


MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – The Alabama Community College Conference has launched women’s flag football as an official sport.

Women’s flag football is one of newest athletic offerings sanctioned by the National Junior College Athletic Association.

ACCC will offer the sport to female student-athletes beginning in the 2025-2026 academic year.

“This new and exciting sport is going to bring additional opportunities to female student-athletes and provide that additional opportunity for them to continue the sport that they love,” said ACCC Commissioner Dean Myrick.

Myrick said women’s flag football has exploded on the parks and recreation level, as well as within the Alabama High School Athletic Association.

Once completion begins next fall, Alabama will feature the largest flag football conference in the NJCAA.
