Lawmaker Steve McMillan, Alabama House member for over 40 years, has died

Rep. Steve McMillan of Gulf Shores, a Republican who had served within the Alabama Home of Representatives for greater than 40 years, died this afternoon. He was 80.

McMillan introduced in January that he had been recognized with three mind tumors and could be present process therapy. He had determined to not search reelection.

McMillan was the dean of the Alabama Home. He was first elected to the District 95 seat as a Democrat in a particular election in 1980. McMillan switched to the Republican Social gathering in 1993.

Home Speaker Mac McCutcheon stated McMillan was dedicated to the folks in his district and was a valued colleague.

“Due to his expertise within the Home, Steve was a mentor to many members by way of the years and he was a detailed buddy and trusted advisor to me,” McCutcheon stated in a press launch. “He wasn’t afraid to take unpopular stands so long as it benefited or protected the folks in his district. My spouse Deb and I ship out heartfelt condolences to his household.”

McMillan served on the agenda-setting Home Guidelines Committee and the Home Methods and Means Schooling Committee, which drafts the annual schooling funds. McMillan was the owner-operator of McMillan and Associates, an actual property agency in Baldwin County.

Home Majority Chief Nathaniel Ledbetter, R-Rainsville, praised McMillan’s contributions to the state and his district.

“All through his 42 years within the Alabama Home of Representatives, Rep. Steve McMillan labored tirelessly to serve the wants of his Baldwin County constituents and make Alabama a fair higher place to dwell, work, worship, and lift a household,” Ledbetter stated. “His integrity and demeanor earned him the belief of Home members on either side of the aisle, and he labored successfully with Republicans and Democrats alike. Each Home Speaker underneath whom he served revered his opinion and was influenced by his counsel.

“When Rep. McMillan spoke, his colleagues listened. Steve McMillan’s legacy will dwell on within the scores of legislators he mentored and suggested, the essential measures he sponsored and handed, and the Lodge at Gulf State Park that he labored so onerous for thus a few years to make a actuality.

McMillan’s funeral will probably be on Could 7 at Gulf Shores United Methodist Church.

Three Republicans are operating for the GOP nomination to the Home District 95 seat through the Could 24 main: Frances Holk-Jones of Foley, Michael Ludvigsen of Gulf Shores, and Reginald Pulliam of Gulf Shores. The winner will face Democrat Richard David Brackner Jr. of Gulf Shores in November.  Brackner is unopposed in subsequent month’s main.
