Roads to close in Mount Washington for landslide repair work
MOUNT WASHINGTON, Pa. (KDKA) – Road closures will take effect starting Monday, April 29, to allow crews to work on the Climate Resilience Mitigation Project, locally called the Mount Washington Landslide Remediation Project.
Vehicular and pedestrian traffic will be closed off along William Street between Arlington Avenue and Cola Street beginning at 7 a.m. Monday. Starting on May 6, residents living on Cola Street will see the construction of a temporary road between Lava Street and Cola Street to provide access, according to a City of Pittsburgh press release.
Allison Park Contractors will work on installing new roadway drainage, repairing the roadway, and installing new retaining walls, among other duties. The project is scheduled to be completed by December 2024.
Several locations in Mount Washington have been affected by hillside instability, causing debris to spill onto roadways and walkways. The three locations identified as areas that would best benefit from the remediation project are Greenleaf Street, Reese Street and William Street, the press release added.
The project also focuses on stabilizing parts of the northern and western slopes of Mount Washington, with retaining walls and geotechnical installations to protect homes and roadways.
The City of Pittsburgh Department of Mobility and Infrastructure is continuing to work with emergency management agencies at the federal and state levels to secure the hillsides of Mount Washington and minimize the probability of landslides.

Frontier Airlines announced on Thursday that beginning today they are offering nonstop, twice-daily service from Pittsburgh International Airport to Philadelphia International Airport.
The airline will also offer nonstop service three times daily to Dallas-Fort Worth beginning today.
They will also offer four times weekly, nonstop service to Atlanta and Raleigh Durham beginning on May 17.

McKEESPORT, Pa. (KDKA) — One person was taken to the hospital following a late-night shooting in McKeesport.
The shooting happened along Scott Street just before midnight on Wednesday.
Dispatchers tell KDKA that police and medics were called to the area just before midnight and that one person was taken to the hospital by medics.
KDKA’s overnight unit captured video of a car that appeared to be hit with bullets and had a window shot out as well.
It’s unclear what led up to the shooting or if police will be releasing any suspect descriptions.
The condition of the person who was taken to the hospital is unknown at this time.
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers’ season opener has been officially revealed and it has plenty of storylines behind it.
Confirming the leaks and reports that had been coming out in the days and hours leading up to the official release, the NFL announced that the Steelers will open the 2024 season on the road against the Atlanta Falcons, who employed multiple key members of the new-look Steelers offense in 2023.
Perhaps the biggest change that came to Pittsburgh this offseason was the hiring of former Falcons head coach Arthur Smith to serve as offensive coordinator. Smith left Atlanta with a 21-30 record and plenty of questions swirling about his abilities to develop quarterbacks and get the biggest playmakers on offense the ball. But the Steelers are confident his run-first approach will fit well with the retooled roster and help the unit improve on some miserable marks from the past two seasons.
Smith will have some former Falcons to work with while he does that in Cordarrelle Patterson and Scotty Miller, who signed with the Steelers as free agents this offseason.
The Falcons went through plenty of changes of their own this offseason, adding $180 million man Kirk Cousins to be their starting quarterback and hiring Raheem Morris to kickstart the franchise around after three middling seasons.
It is maybe not the flashiest season opening opponent the Steelers could have drawn, but these two up-and-comers will try to announce themselves as serious contenders with lots of new faces in place in Week 1.
