Pittsburgh-area auto repair shop preparing for busy winter season
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A Pittsburgh-area auto repair shop is getting ready for the busy winter season amid a stretch of bitterly cold weather.
“We get more check engine lights,” Tim Dietz, owner of Troubleshooters in Ross Township, said. “And we get more ‘My tire pressure monitoring lights coming on.’”
This bitter blast of cold weather that the Pittsburgh area has been experiencing has provided a wake-up call for some that winter is knocking at the door.
For a lot of people, it also may provide a wake-up call for the fact that they need to get their cars ready for this time of year.
“We see a lot of cars coming in here with low tire tread,” Dietz said.
It’s something Dietz claims people neglect, especially with the holidays coming up.
“If it’s a decision of getting four new tires for the winter or buying toys for your kids or clothes for your children – usually the tires lose out,” Dietz said.
Monday was another busy day — busy enough to get worn out, like what many people do to their oil.
“A lot of people are just neglecting that,” Dietz said.
He then explained that changing it regularly can help this time of year with the cold temps.
“The car will start quicker with a fresh oil change – it’ll start easier,” he said.
A fresh battery, especially with the below-freezing temps, can also help the car start more easily.
“For the most part, we’ll get batteries that people can’t get started,” Dietz said. “If the battery’s older than 4 years old, replace it.”
Dietz said the cold temps even make people more likely to tow cars for things like flat tires. He’s expecting a busy time at the shop.
“So you’re gonna be getting a lot of phone calls?” KDKA-TV asked Dietz.
“I hope so,” he responded.

Mike Tomlin, Pittsburgh Steelers continue winning ways
Eli Manning Leads Pro Football HOF Class Of 2025 Nominees
Legendary quarterback Eli Manning leads a list of 167 candidates who’ve been nominated for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2025.
Manning, a two-time Super Bowl MVP, joins former Defensive Players of the Year Luke Kuechly and Terrell Suggs as first-time nominees.
A screening committee will cut the list down to 50 nominees next month, before the list is reduced to 25 semifinalists and again to 15 finalists.
Candidates must need 80% of the votes to get into the Hall of Fame, with between three and five modern-era candidates able to be inducted in each class.
Manning will look to join his brother Peyton into the Hall of Fame with both siblings, two of just 13 quarterbacks to win multiple Super Bowls.
Manning was drafted by the San Diego Chargers as the No.1 pick in 2004 before being traded to the New York Giants, where he won his first Super Bowl in 2007.
The four-time pro bowler won his second title four years later, beating the New England Patriots again, and became one of just six players to win multiple Super Bowl MVPs.

Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers continue to prove there’s an opportunity for consistency in the NFL, which is constantly changing and evolving.
Tomlin has provided a winning football culture within the franchise during his 18 years at the helm.
The Steelers improved to 9-3 on Sunday, following a 44-38 victory against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Here’s what you need to know about the Steelers’ winning ways:
How many consecutive winning seasons have the Steelers had?
The Steelers tied an NFL record with their 21st non-losing season, including the last 18 with Tomlin, after the win on Sunday.
Tomlin’s 18-year winning run, which started in 2007, is now four seasons longer of a streak than any other start to a head coach’s career. He’s had at least 10 seasons with double-digit victories during that time.
Tomlin trails Bill Belichick’s 19 straight winning seasons with the New England Patriots, which is second only to former Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry.
Landry’s Cowboys are the only other team to accomplish 21 consecutive seasons of finishing at least .500 or better. The feat was achieved from 1965 to 1985.
Who was the coach when the Steelers’ streak started?
Bill Cowher spent 14 years as the head coach of the Steelers from 1992 to 2006. Cowher’s final three seasons from 2004 to 2006 started the winning season’s streak.

A blast of cold air in Pittsburgh kicks off the weather forecast for December
By: CBS First Alert Meteorologist Carl Lam
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Now that we’re officially into meteorological winter (which is different than astronomical winter), we are in for a true shot of cold air that is going to be sticking around Western Pennsylvania for quite a while.

The month of November was especially warm for us and there was plenty of heat early on in the month but just in the last week, the colder air has had more staying power. You’ll notice in the graph below that temperatures recently have been well below average, compared to the very warm highs we had early on.
Today is another cold day with temperatures a little warmer than Saturday. Temperatures should reach the upper 20s up north to the low 30s in Pittsburgh and the surrounding suburbs around Franklin Park, Buffalo Township, Cranberry, and Canonsburg.
While we are expecting partly sunny conditions around town today, there could be a few pockets of flurries for areas north of I-80 and for the Laurel Highlands. Otherwise, it is looking like a decent day and the winds won’t be as strong either but it will still lead to a wind chill in the 20s.
If you’re traveling out to the game in Cincinnati, you don’t have any weather concerns that you’ll have to deal with. You’ll be avoiding any of the wintry weather but just dress warm for the game since temperatures will be in the low 30s in Ohio as well.
As we head into Monday, we are tracking the possibility of some more light snow shower activity, due to a shift in the winds, that may bring some lake effect snow showers into areas like Oil City, New Castle, and Grove City. Accumulations mainly north of I-80 will total up to 1 or 2 inches, if you’re caught in one of the snow bands, outside of that, the snow is going to remain rather light.
Temperatures on Monday will also be into the low 30s with some sunshine also in the mix.
Looking ahead to Wednesday, that’s when we could get our next chance of some more widespread snow moving into Pittsburgh. We are still tracking this system that is swinging into the area and there’s quite a bit of moisture associated with it.
There will be some accumulation from this system during the middle of the week but it is far too early to talk totals at this point. Higher snowfall totals will be in the ridges and Laurel Highlands. The KDKA First Alert Weather Team will be watching this system closely.
The colder air will stick around as we head into the rest of this week and even into next week too, so bundle up and enjoy the more festive feel around town!
