Billy Gardell cheers on Pittsburgh Pirates against New York Mets
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Billy Gardell was spotted at the Pittsburgh Pirates’ game on Tuesday night against the New York Mets.
In a post on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, Gardell shared a photo of himself sitting behind home plate at Citi Field in Queens.
“In New York catching my @Pirates at The Mets. Jones on the bump, let’s go BUUUUUCS!!! CUUUUZ!!! I look like Jimmy Leyland,” he posted on X.
Gardell, sporting a Pirates hat, had a front-row seat for Pirates pitcher Jared Jones, who continued his impressive start to the season. In five innings, he allowed one hit and struck out seven batters.
The Swissvale native loves Pittsburgh’s sports teams, including the Pirates. In a previous interview with CBS News, Gardell said he is a die-hard Pirates fan but they break his heart.
“I stay with them through thick and thin, I’m like any Pittsburgher,” Gardell said in 2021. “I complain and I’m miserable and I stay with them, they’re my team.”
Gardell passed on his passion for Pittsburgh sports to his son. He previously told CBS News that his child was born and lives in Los Angeles, but he forced him to root for the Steelers. As for his baseball team, he let his son choose.
The Pirates lead the New York Mets 1-0 after five innings of play.

Pittsburgh-area cancer patient granted wish of seeing Pittsburgh Pirates play at PNC Park
SHARPSBURG, Pa. (KDKA) – A little joy was brought to Larry Pilarski and his family Monday afternoon, thanks to the Twilight Wish Foundation and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Pilarski, his wife, children and grandchildren were granted the wish to see the Pirates play this Sunday and sit right behind home plate at PNC Park.
Missy Counahan, the Allegheny County Chapter Director of the Twilight Wish Foundation, says that it is a privilege to grant wishes like this to deserving seniors like Pilarski.
“We get more than we give when we do these wishes,” said Counahan. “We do this because we love geriatrics and we have made geriatrics our life’s work, and it is just so important to give back to them.”
Pilarski and his wife Mary Frances have been married for over 40 years. She says that Larry has been battling cancer for over a decade, and this last year has been a difficult one. But, she says, that wishes like this are a true blessing when times are tough.
“Well, this was a wonderful surprise,” said Mary Frances. “Our niece nominated Larry. We didn’t know about this, and we just want to thank Twilight Wish and the Pittsburgh Pirates because we are very grateful. This has been a blessing. He has been a lifelong fan of the Pirates, and so have all of us, so we are very grateful. It’s a blessing. It really is.”
The game that Larry and his family will be this Sunday at PNC Park when the Pirates take on the Colorado Rockies. If you are at the park to cheer on the Pirates and you see Larry, be sure to cheer him on as well.

Roads to close in Mount Washington for landslide repair work
MOUNT WASHINGTON, Pa. (KDKA) – Road closures will take effect starting Monday, April 29, to allow crews to work on the Climate Resilience Mitigation Project, locally called the Mount Washington Landslide Remediation Project.
Vehicular and pedestrian traffic will be closed off along William Street between Arlington Avenue and Cola Street beginning at 7 a.m. Monday. Starting on May 6, residents living on Cola Street will see the construction of a temporary road between Lava Street and Cola Street to provide access, according to a City of Pittsburgh press release.
Allison Park Contractors will work on installing new roadway drainage, repairing the roadway, and installing new retaining walls, among other duties. The project is scheduled to be completed by December 2024.
Several locations in Mount Washington have been affected by hillside instability, causing debris to spill onto roadways and walkways. The three locations identified as areas that would best benefit from the remediation project are Greenleaf Street, Reese Street and William Street, the press release added.
The project also focuses on stabilizing parts of the northern and western slopes of Mount Washington, with retaining walls and geotechnical installations to protect homes and roadways.
The City of Pittsburgh Department of Mobility and Infrastructure is continuing to work with emergency management agencies at the federal and state levels to secure the hillsides of Mount Washington and minimize the probability of landslides.

Steelers Still Need One More Piece
PITTSBURGH– The Pittsburgh Steelers were winners over draft weekend. GM Omar Khan stood pat with his selections and didn’t give up any assets to move up. Even so, the Steelers managed to draft players expected to go higher in the draft and fill holes on their team. They strengthened multiple positions of need, especially the offensive line. Due to their performance, pundits around the league rightly praised the 2024 Steelers’ draft class
With their impressive draft and offseason moves, the Steelers’ offense is poised for a rebound year. Their quarterback room is totally revamped with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields stepping in. Their running back duo is tops in the league. Pat Freiermuth is looking to stay healthy and re-assert himself as a threat. Their offensive line is going from replacement level to brimming with potential. Everything on that side of the ball feels improved.
And then there is the wide receiver position. While the organization gave a vote of confidence to the current ones on the roster prior to the draft, it feels glaringly obvious that this position will hold the offense back. The current wide receiver room consists of de facto number one George Pickens, unproven youngster Calvin Austin III, two depth veterans in Van Jefferson and Quez Watkins, and newly drafted Roman Wilson.
Perhaps this is too critical, but nothing about that group will intimidate opposing defenses and defensive coordinators. If Calvin Austin III can continue improving, he could force defenses to give him respect, but he’s not there yet. Similarly, Jefferson and Watkins have big play potential now and then, but they aren’t consistent enough to warrant further attention. Roman Wilson has yet to catch a pass in the NFL. Put it all together, and Pittsburgh’s aerial attack has one real option to defend: Pickens.
The Steelers have made it clear that they are committed to running the ball and protecting their quarterback. They will rely on a physical offensive line. and their potent pair of running backs to establish their tempo and open up the passing game. Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith excels with run dominant offenses, like he did in Tennessee during his last OC position, and that should be the same for Pittsburgh this upcoming season.
The only problem with that is Russell Wilson, or Justin Fields will need more than the double-covered George Pickens to throw to. If they want to have an offense that can hurt the defense in multiple ways, they need another weapon on the outside to throw to. The Steelers may not admit it publicly, but the wide receiver position is now their biggest area of need.
With the amount of veteran receivers linked to Pittsburgh over the draft process, it feels like the Steelers aren’t quite done adding to their room. Whether that comes via trade or adding a player once camp opens, the Steelers need to address their biggest positional need before the season begins.
