AUGUSTA — Rep. William “Billy Bob” Faulkingham (R-Winter Harbor) is co-sponsoring laws that may give Maine sovereign rights over as much as 12 miles off its shoreline.
Presently, Maine’s jurisdiction over offshore waters by state statute is from “the marginal sea to its outermost limits as mentioned limits might every so often be outlined or acknowledged by america of America by worldwide treaty or in any other case.” The proposed laws would amend the statute by giving the state jurisdiction over “territorial waters” that it “owns and should train jurisdiction over and management” seaward for 12 nautical miles.
This follows maritime regulation, which permits a coastal state to assert and train sovereignty over a territorial sea that extends seaward as much as 12 nautical miles, the airspace above it and the seabed and subsoil beneath it. Sovereignty contains the ability to make legal guidelines and train energy with out interference.
