Saturday’s snow has changed over to rain and freezing rain for most of Connectiuct on Sunday morning.

Steady rain was falling along the shoreline, and that rain will continue through most of the day.

More concerning is what will be falling through inland parts of the state. Freezing rain is expected to fall there and may continue into mid-morning in some spots.

Freezing rain is rain as is falls from the clouds to a sub-freezing environment on the ground. With inland temperatures remaining below freezing for several hours Sunday morning, that means any rain that falls will freeze on contact, creating hazardous travel conditions.

The ice can also weigh down tree limbs and powerlines, leading to power outages. Eversource was reporting more than 3,000 outages as of 7:30 a.m. United Illuminating was reporting more than 5,400 outages.

The winds are expected to increase Sunday afternoon, which could cause additional outages.

Monday is partly sunny with temperatures near or just above 30.

Waves of people headed to Dunkin Park in Hartford on Saturday to take advantage of the Yard Goats’ annual job fair.

“I want to be successful. I want to make money. I want to make a life for myself and I’m going to do whatever it takes,” said Francisca Paul, of Hartford.

Paul, 15, is chasing her dreams with the help of the Hartford Yard Goats.

“This is very important to me because I feel like it’s the start of my future,” Paul said.

Shei s one of many student-athletes and people from the community to apply for a job at Dunkin Park for the upcoming Yard Goats season.

“It’s just a good experience. I mean it’s a nice summer job,” said Jaxon Rowlands, of Vernon.

“I just want to know what it’s like to work in such a big environment with a lot of people here,” said Elian Delgado, of Vernon.

“We’re looking for ushers, ticket takers, concession workers, you know, folks to work in production booth. We’re looking for grounds, crew members, operation teams, really a little bit of everything,” said Yard Goats General Manager Mike Abramson.

The Yard Goats have been hosting the event since 2015 and say the hope is to hire at least 100 people from Saturday’s event.

“I’m an unemployed person and I just need a job. I just love people, being around people and having the opportunity to work at a place where’s there’s a lot of people,” said Ellie Falby, of Manchester.

“I feel like I’m going to gain like a lot of experience working like a lot experience with people, a lot of new people around me and some confidence,” added Rayne Harris, of Hartford.

While it was cold and breezy on Friday, we may take a turn for the worse this weekend.

We spoke with the experts who tell us snow and ice could be headed our way this weekend, and it could lead to power outages across the state.

Carol Gayle is one of the many people at Larsen Ace Hardware in West Hartford prepping for the wintry conditions expected this weekend.

“I’m here to pick up an ice scraper for the ice. Every car needs an ice scraper in it, and it’s wintertime in Connecticut,” Gayle said.

NBC CT StormTracker meteorologist Alexis Clemons tells us what we are currently expecting.

“We are looking at some snow accumulations as we go through Saturday afternoon that is likely going to transition to more of an icy mixture,” Clemons said.

She told us there are a lot of factors still at play, and one degree in either direction can make all the difference.

“Worst case scenario for us is if we have a very big warm nose atmosphere that creates a prolonged period of icing,” Clemons said. “That is where we could see some very high ice accumulation, and that’s where power outages and downed trees come into play.”

Eversource spokesperson Jamie Ratliff said they are keeping a close eye on this weekend’s storm.

“We have increased staffing for the weekend, and crews will be positioned around the state in advance of the storm to quickly respond to any potential power outages or damage to the electric system,” Ratliff said.

So how can you prepare? Hugh Hollinshead from Larsen Ace Hardware in West Hartford said it’s always busy this time of the year.

“We have gloves, we have shovels, we have roof rakes,” Hollinshead said.

He said they have generators in stock in case you lose your power. But he emphasized you need to be careful while using them.

“Carbon monoxide is a by-product of the burning, so it has to be outside. Not in a closed garage, but outside,” Hollinshead said.

Eversource reminds people to stay away from any down power lines and to not let their pets near them either.

They recommend if you see any downed wires to report it by calling 9-1-1.
