Historic Connecticut church damaged by fire

An historic church in Taftville was damaged in a fire on Saturday night, police said.

A police officer spotted the blaze at the Taftville Congregational Church about 10:06 p.m. Saturday, according to the Norwich Police Department. Taftville is part of Norwich.

The officer told dispatchers that the fire was spreading quickly and the structure was reportedly fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, police said.

The church, established in 1904, is located at 16 North B St.

The building was believed to be unoccupied at the time of the fire and an investigation into the cause of the fire was underway, police said.
