Driver accused of attempting to hit pedestrians in Stonington
A driver is accused of attempting to hit pedestrians in Stonington on Saturday night.
Officers responded to a collision where a pedestrian was struck and the driver fled the scene. When police responded, they said they found an injured pedestrian and witnesses directed officers to the suspect vehicle that was stopped in traffic nearby.
As officers approached, police said the driver briefly spoke with them before deliberately driving his vehicle into a stone wall where the victim was sitting with other people nearby. The suspect reportedly then fled, but was stopped a short distance away by officers.
Investigators said they later learned the suspect had initially backed into and struck another person after being seen speeding and advised to slow down.
The driver was taken into custody and is facing charges including evading responsibility with physical injury, reckless endangerment, criminal attempt to commit assault, reckless driving and disobeying the signal of an officer. They were released on a $250,000 bond and is due in court on September 10.
The investigation is active and ongoing.
