A Connecticut man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for being found with millions of photos and videos of children being sexually abused — including some of infants and toddlers — more than 30 years after he was first convicted of sexually assaulting a boy, federal officials said.

Investigators found Richard E. Smith, 67, of Southington, looking at child pornography on the dark web when they searched his home in the fall of 2020. He had four computer monitors set up at the time of the search, with one showing a spreadsheet of links to more child pornography, according to the United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut.

Smith’s criminal history includes convictions related to the sexual assault of boys in 1990 and 1998, according to federal authorities said.

Smith has been in custody since his arrest following the search of his home by special agents from the department of Homeland Security Investigations on Oct. 1, 2020 and pleaded guilty on Nov. 28, 2022, to possession of child pornography, federal authorities said.

He appeared in court in New Haven on this week and was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey A. Meyer to a total of 144 months in prison, to be followed by 15 years of supervised release, officials said.
