3 injured by lightning at The Travelers Championship in Connecticut
More than 8 million people in five states in the Northeast and New England have been included in a Tornado Watch as the severe weather threat increases on Sunday, June 23, 2024.
CROMWELL, Conn. – Severe thunderstorms and heat have complicated The Travelers Championship in Connecticut this weekend after three people were injured when lightning struck a tree on the golf course.
On Saturday, Round 3 of the Championship was suspended for several hours due to stormy weather. A severe thunderstorm warning was in effect for parts of Connecticut.
According to the National Weather Service in New York, lightning was reported near Cromwell around 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

First responders helped several injured people at the TPC River Highlands Golf Course after the lightning strike. According to a report from the NWS, two people were taken to the hospital and a third person refused treatment.
FOX 61 Hartford reported the lightning strike happened near the 5th hole on the golf course.
In addition to thunderstorms, players and spectators have also faced extreme heat this weekend. Cromwell is under a heat advisory until Sunday evening. Feels-like temperatures were forecast to reach near 100 degrees through Sunday.

There is some relief from the heat coming for the Northeast, but with the cold front comes a renewed threat of severe thunderstorms on Sunday.

Three Rocky Hill firefighters were honored Monday night for their part in a rescue on the Connecticut River in March.
Emergency crews responded to Ferry Park in Rocky Hill on March 23 in response to a report of a vehicle in the river.
When they arrived, they found a woman in a Jeep about 35 feet out from the riverbank.
Crews broke a window and pulled the woman to safety after about 10 minutes, according to fire officials.
The woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Monday evening, Captain William Kelly, Captain Roberto Leone, and Lt. Travis Gerace-Hicks were awarded the fire department’s valor award for their rescue efforts.
ROCKY HILL — A man from South Carolina is facing charges after cutting down light poles along the highway in Rocky Hill, Connecticut State Police said.
Lamont Carlson Tucker, 62, of Myrtle Beach, is charged with first-degree criminal mischief and fourth-degree larceny, police said.
Police said troopers responded to reports of “an individual cutting light poles” around 5 a.m. Saturday.
Tucker was released on a $3,000 bond and is scheduled to appear at state Superior Court in New Britain June 12, police said.
