The Boston Bruins are simply having an excruciating time finding the back of the net.

For the second straight game, the Bruins had their chances but managed to score just one goal. After a couple of defensive lapses in the first period, they lost a 2-1 decision to the New York Rangers on Thursday night at Madison Square Garden.

“I like the effort for the most part of our group,” interim head coach Joe Sacco told Andy Brickley on NESN’s postgame. “I thought that the guys tried to execute the game plan. I feel like we’re trying to make a better play all the time right now in situations where we can put the puck to the net and create some more opportunities for us that way.

“But, you score one goal the last two games, it’s tough. It puts a lot of pressure on your team’s defense. We’re still defending fairly well, but we’ve got to find a way to be more consistent offensively.”

The Bruins outplayed the Rangers for most of the game, but with the Rangers leading 2-0 at the end of the first period, Jonathan Quick did a great job of preserving the two-goal lead.

“We had a lot of chances, but we didn’t capitalize,” David Pastrnak told reporters in New York. “It’s tough because their goalie played amazing. I thought, especially in the second period, we had the opportunity to tie the game. We played really well, and the chances were there. We just didn’t capitalize.”

Here are more notes from Thursday’s Bruins-Rangers game:

— The Rangers snapped a four-game losing skid with the win over the Bruins. They had lost seven of their last eight and 15 of their last 19.

— Jeremy Swayman stopped 25-of-27 shots he faced and fell to 13-12-3 on the season.

— The Bruins fell to 8-12-2 on the season when opponents score first, 11-10-1 against Eastern Conference opponents and 5-7-0 against teams in the Metropolitan Division. Boston is 0-3-1 against New York in their last four meetings dating back to last season. The two Original Six franchises will play two more times this season — Feb. 1 in Boston and Feb. 5 in New York.

— Elias Lindholm tallied the only Bruins goal of the game, his seventh of the season. He has faced Quick in 14 games and has four career goals against the Connecticut native.

— Both clubs had one power play opportunity but were unable to capitalize on the man advantage. Neither team registered a shot on goal while skating 5-on-4.

— Quick improved to 14-6-1 against the Bruins in 21 games with the Los Angeles Kings and Rangers.

— The Bruins complete their three-game road trip on Saturday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Puck drop for the Original Six matchup is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET, and you can watch the game on NESN, following an hour of pregame coverage.

Public works crews in the City of Pittsburgh are preparing for another round of snow that’s expected to impact tomorrows morning commute.

Some people hope it won’t be a repeat of how the city handled last week’s snowfall.

With more snow on the way, some people in the City of Pittsburgh are concerned and still frustrated over last week’s wintry mess.

Several cars got stuck on Negley Avenue in Squirrel Hill the morning of Dec. 21.

Some people say a lot of roads were unsalted across the city.

“It’s Pittsburgh, they are supposed to be ready for stuff like this you know, should be out the day before night before salting everything,” DoorDash driver Robert Dennis said.

Dennis uses Negley Avenue daily.

“It’s the main drag. I go down it everyday. I don’t see why they wouldn’t come out and salt it. That’s crazy,” Dennis said.

The City of Pittsburgh said that day public works was responding to unexpected heavy snowfall.

A Ring camera video showed a car sliding on ice, nearly hitting an SUV and slamming straight into the side of a house on Parkwood Road in Mount Oliver that same day.

By that afternoon, the city deployed 40 plow trucks.

“I have friends who live on the slopes and Mount Oliver area that did have a big problem couple weeks ago. I’m glad they are gonna do a better job this time,” Lucy Leitner said.

Today, Allegheny County’s Department of Public Works said when the snow starts early Friday morning, they will have 30 salt trucks with plows deployed.

The city said they are also prepared and will have 60 trucks out overnight to treat the roads.

The city says the bulk of the snow is expected to hit during rush hour tomorrow morning so they will have crews out around the clock to make sure the roads are safe.

We’re entering our coldest and snowiest time of the year across Connecticut, but are there any snowstorms on the way?

Our NBC Connecticut StormTracker meteorologists say Monday will be our next best chance.

We’ll get to that in a moment, but let’s take a quick glance at our January numbers first.

It’s one of our coldest and snowiest months of the year in the Hartford area, averaging 14 inches of snow, with highs typically around 35 degrees and lows in the upper 10s.

Our next chance of snow will be originating from the Midwest, where a large portion of the area is under a Winter Storm Watch.

Omaha, Wichita, Kansas City, St. Louis, Indianapolis and even Washington, D.C. could be in for a wallop of snow and ice. But what about us?

The chances are low at the moment. The bulk of the snowstorm is expected to pass just to our south.

All hope is not lost, however, as the northern fringe of the snowstorm could graze parts of Connecticut with a glancing blow of snow.

At this time, the chances of snow remain low (20 to 30%), but we’ll continue to monitor any changes to the Monday forecast.
