South Dakota rounds up parole absconders

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – Skipping out on your parole officer isn’t as easy in South Dakota as it was a couple of years ago.
The Department of Corrections says the number of parole absconders dropped below 100.
“The number of in-state parole absconders has decreased from a total of 486 when I started as secretary to 97 as of October 1st,” said Secretary of Corrections Kellie Wasko.
The push to round up absconders began in 2023 when DOC set up a unit to specifically lower the number of people who don’t check in with their supervising parole agents; or violate release from prison rules. Since then, DOC and it’s partners have arrested 250 absconders.
The Absconder Apprehension Unit works with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, including task forces.
“The effort to hold offenders in the community accountable for their actions is working. I’m extremely proud of the hard work that the parole division has done to achieve this goal and for all that they do to help ensure public safety,” Wasko said.
