NECIC to host community visioning session for Mansfield’s north end in partnership with Heritage Ohio

MANSFIELD — The North End Community Improvement Collaborative, Inc. (NECIC) will host a Community Visioning Session in partnership with Heritage Ohio, Inc. on Tuesday, July 28 at 6 p.m. at the United Steelworkers Hall, located at 376 West Longview Avenue in Mansfield.

The public is invited to attend and share input on the future of Mansfield’s North End, with a focus on strengthening neighborhood revitalization efforts and identifying opportunities for continued growth and investment.

The session is part of an upcoming visit from Heritage Ohio’s Downtown Assessment Resource Team, also known as D.A.R.T. The visit is designed to help communities explore next steps for revitalization and introduce the key building blocks of a successful long term revitalization effort: organization, promotion, design, and economic vitality.

NECIC reached out to Heritage Ohio as part of its ongoing work to support revitalization in the North End, especially near the corner of Springmill Street and Bowman Street, where NECIC has been focusing recent revitalization efforts.

Since joining the organization in early 2025, NECIC President & CEO Matthew Benko- Scruggs has placed a strong focus on revitalization near the corner of Springmill Street and Bowman Street.

This work has included the organization’s move back into the neighborhood, continued investment in the area, and community centered efforts such as the Springmill Spring Cleanup event.

During the Community Visioning Session, residents, business owners, stakeholders, and other community members will have the opportunity to learn more about Heritage Ohio, the revitalization process, and ways they can help shape the future of the North End.

“We want this process to be rooted in the voices of the people who live, work, and invest in the North End,” said Benko-Scruggs. “This session is an opportunity for the community to share ideas and help guide what revitalization can look like in our neighborhood.”

Heritage Ohio, Inc. is a statewide nonprofit organization that supports the development, redevelopment, and improvement of downtowns and neighborhood districts throughout Ohio through technical assistance, training, networking, and advocacy.

Community members are encouraged to attend and take part in the conversation.

Woman missing for nearly 6 months found dead in Ohio

Human remains found in West Price Hill, Ohio, were identified as a woman who had been missing for nearly six months, officials said.

Mercedes Southard’s remains were found in a wooded area off Minion Avenue on July 30, CBS affiliate WKRC reported. Investigators confirmed her identity from dental records.

A cause of death for the 31-year-old woman was not immediately released, WKRC reported. The Cincinnati Police Department’s Homicide Unit is investigating the woman’s death.

Cincinnati police said in a social media post from April that the 31-year-old woman was last seen Feb. 3 around 3 p.m. Police said she walked away from her home in the West Price Hill area and did not return. No other information surrounding her disappearance was released at the time.

Southard’s family told WKRC she had four kids and was “the best mom.”

“We can’t sleep at night and we’re just thinking like, was she trafficked? Was she kidnapped? Did something happen to where she was just left?” Mindy Shelton, a family friend, told the news outlet in June.

Southard’s family had been offering a $2,000 reward for information about her whereabouts. Anyone with information on Southard’s case can call Cincinnati police at 513-263-8300.

Ohio sales tax holiday is this weekend: Here is what you need to know

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – Gov. Mike DeWine is encouraging Ohioans to take advantage of this year’s sales tax holiday.

The savings are in place from midnight Friday, Aug. 7 through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Aug 9.

The following items qualify for the sales tax exemption during the three-day holiday:

Clothing priced at $75 or less per item
School supplies priced at $20 or less per item
School instructional materials priced at $20 or less per item

“Ohio’s Sales Tax Holiday comes at a time of year when families are getting ready for back-to-school,” said Governor DeWine. “The sales tax break is designed to provide meaningful savings for families as they purchase new school essentials for the upcoming year.”

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Republican Sen. Jon Husted of Ohio called on Rep. Max Miller Thursday to resign his House seat and abandon his fall reelection bid.

Miller is facing a congressional ethics investigation related to domestic abuse allegations leveled against him by his ex-wife, and anxiety over his electability this fall is growing within his party. But the second-term, Cleveland-area congressman has continued to insist that he will hold the course.

In a post on X, Husted said he knows Miller, his ex-wife, Emily Moreno, the daughter of Sen. Bernie Moreno, and their daughter, and “I do not see how a campaign for Congress benefits any of them.”

“I believe Max would be making the right decision to step aside as a candidate and resign from Congress to focus on what is in the best interest of his daughter,” he wrote. “Years from now, I believe he will look back and know it was the right choice for her.”

Another Republican senator, Tim Sheehy of Montana, also urged Miller on Thursday to “step aside and seek help.”

“Staying in this race makes it far more likely we lose this seat and hand Democrats a majority to impeach President Trump,” he said on X.

Miller faces Democrat Brian Poindexter, a union ironworker and local councilman, for Ohio’s 7th Congressional District.

A message seeking comment was left with Miller’s spokesperson. The congressman has vehemently denied all allegations of domestic abuse leveled against him by his former spouse.

Husted’s and Sheehy’s comments added to the increasing pressure on Miller from both Democrats and fellow Republicans. Sen. Bernie Moreno, the state’s senior senator, reacted to Miller’s livestream on X Sunday by saying that Miller is unfit to serve — though he never specifically urged Miller to resign or end his November campaign.

Under Ohio law, Miller would need to withdraw by Saturday to allow enough time for the replacement process to play out before the 4 p.m. Monday deadline.

Donovan O’Neil, state director of Americans for Prosperity-Ohio, an influential conservative organization, also labeled Miller “unfit to serve” in an X post Thursday.

O’Neil said Republicans just a month ago called out Graham Platner, a now-former Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Maine, over a sexual assault claim he denied and they “should be just as willing to call out Max Miller and exorcise our own demons from the GOP.”
