College basketball notebook: Ohio State’s questionable buzzer-beater win

Nicely, that was a wild week of faculty basketball.

Let’s begin with “The Name” on Thursday night time.

Ohio State beat Rutgers on a 3-pointer by Tanner Holden on the buzzer. The issue although, was that Holden stepped out of bounds, got here again in bounds, caught a cross from Bruce Thornton and hit a 3-pointer on the buzzer for a 67-66 win.

The Huge Ten issued an announcement saying that the decision was incorrect. The basket shouldn’t have counted because of NCAA Rule 9, Part 3, Article 1, which states {that a} participant who goes out of bounds of his personal volition cannot be the primary one to the touch the ball when he re-enters the court docket.

All true.

However the play would not have mattered if Rutgers’ Caleb McConnell had hit the second of his two free throws, or perhaps if Paul Mulcahy had closed out faster on Holden. That is on Rutgers.

The officers might have missed Thornton stepping out of bounds. And so they definitely did not see Holden exit of bounds and are available again into the play in a break up second.

Ought to they’ve caught Holden stepping in? Perhaps. Nevertheless it occurred so rapidly, and the officers aren’t centered on that sideline play. One high-level official instructed me Sunday that the rule was put in place for gamers who could be stepping in from the baseline, not the sideline.

What ought to occur is a evaluation. I’ve talked to quite a few coaches who wish to see each end-of-game basket reviewed. The video games are too vital to not get it proper. Sure, there may be human error, and a few performs are taking place manner too quick for the human eye. I get it. However game-winning buckets needs to be reviewable. This one wasn’t. If the query was whether or not the shot was a 2-pointer or 3-pointer, or whether or not the shot was launched in time, then it’s reviewable. However whether or not a participant got here from out of bounds shouldn’t be. The officers have been appropriate to depart the court docket with out checking the monitor, regardless of Rutgers desirous to see the play once more.

But when there’s a change to come back from this occasion, then it needs to be making certain that game-winning baskets — irrespective of how they arrive about — have to be checked. This needs to be addressed within the offseason.

The week for …

Alabama: The Tide gained at Houston and have now crushed two No. 1 groups this season — Houston and North Carolina. Love the best way Nate Oats will get his staff to play with function and fervour each possession. This was a comeback win at Houston and proved the Tide are within the chase for the SEC title.

Illinois: Wow, what a chaotic week for the Illini. They got here again to beat Texas in OT within the Jimmy V Basic in New York, solely to then utterly fall flat at house towards Penn State. Brad Underwood had an epic rant postgame Saturday — even making a fart noise to explain the management of Terrence Shannon Jr. Sure, I needed to sort that. Look, Underwood is an amazing coach and motivator. My solely concern/touch upon ripping your staff on this new period is that transfers will not have any fairness and loyalty built-in with a college and coach a number of months from now. This form of factor can backfire. Let’s examine how the Illini reply.

Cam Whitmore: The heralded freshman for Villanova was out with a thumb damage. He returned for the previous three video games — all wins over Oklahoma, Penn and Boston Faculty. Whitmore is averaging 15.7 factors prior to now three video games.

Iowa: The Hawkeyes needed to play with out their finest participant Kris Murray towards rival Iowa State and Wisconsin. They almost gained them each. The Hawkeyes beat the Cyclones and misplaced to the Badgers in OT. That is fairly good for an Iowa staff that’s nonetheless discovering its rotation.

Memphis: SMU switch Kendric Davis scored 27 factors in a win over Auburn to ship a robust sign that Memphis is not going wherever within the AAC. Memphis wanted a big-time switch and obtained one in Davis.

UConn: The Huskies are in place to be a No. 1 seed. That is saying one thing below Dan Hurley, who has made it clear that he was going to construct a nationwide contender. Kevin Ollie gained a nationwide title in 2014. However Hurley is the closest coach to Jim Calhoun that UConn has seen. Hurley has the depth that the Huskies devoted has grown accustomed to for many years. He nonetheless hasn’t gained an NCAA Match recreation, however I’d be shocked if they do not go deep this season — particularly as a excessive seed.

Is UConn one of the best staff in school basketball?

Is UConn the best team in college basketball?

Mark Titus and Tate Frazier focus on UConn’s spectacular win over Florida and whether or not the Huskies needs to be ranked No. 1 within the nation.

Creighton: The Bluejays have utterly slid with 4 straight losses, culminating with a neutral-site loss to BYU. Creighton must get wholesome (Ryan Kalkbrenner was absent). The Jays nonetheless have the potential to be a top-three staff within the Huge East, however the preseason convention favorites are most likely behind UConn, Xavier, Marquette, and perhaps even St. John’s proper now within the pecking order.

Arizona: The Wildcats’ loss to Utah clearly was an anomaly. They have been one thing to behold in beating Indiana in Las Vegas behind the spirited Kerr Kriisa, bigs Azuolas Tubelis and Oumar Ballo, and massive guards Pelle Larsson and Courtney Ramey. This staff retains coming at you.

The A-10: Fordham (11-1) is one of the best staff within the A-10. And there is no manner the Rams are an at-large staff at this juncture. The A-10 is a one-bid league in mid-December. There’s nonetheless time to alter that narrative, however the alternatives are fading.

Louisville and Cal: The Cardinals are 0-9. The Bears are 0-11. Not a lot might be mentioned right here. This simply should not occur, particularly after they have each had purchase video games on the house slate.

The SWAC: Grambling State beat Vanderbilt. Which means the SWAC has 4 wins towards Energy 5 colleges.

The Mountain West: Three groups on this convention are undefeated, and none of them are named San Diego State. UNLV (10-0), New Mexico (9-0) and Utah State (8-0) are a mixed 27-0, and will all be on tempo to hitch the Aztecs with NCAA bids.

KJ Williams: The Murray State switch has been a serious hit for LSU, together with a 35-point outing in a win over Wake Forest. Preserve tabs on his progress.

Antoine Davis: The Detroit beginning guard handed the three,000-point mark. He did it on his tenth 3-pointer of the sport in an OT loss to Charlotte. Davis is the eleventh participant in NCAA historical past in Division I to attain 3000-plus factors.

SyracuseGeorgetown: The sport was on ABC, however I can not keep in mind a time when this recreation lacked any sort of buzz. Loopy instances.

No matter who wins between Notre Dame, Ohio State, this bettor’s positioned to profit

LAS VEGAS — Notre Dame and Ohio State winning their semifinal playoff games meant the wisdom of Tom Petty, once again, rang true.

“Even the losers / Get lucky sometimes.”

Sometimes, fortune smiles upon minnow bettors whose stacks of losing tickets provide so many bookmarks, coasters and, yes, even novel wrapping paper.

On Dec. 12, I studied the new 12-team College Football Playoff with a keen eye to newly released title-game exacta odds.

My college-pigskin rudder is points-per-play, ratios available at TeamRankings.com. The tale of teams is contained in those fractions.

On offense and defense, and overall margins, Notre Dame had sparkled since early October. “Past three games” reveals how teams are currently running.

I applied those figures to project each playoff game, best squad moving on. I played out the tournament, producing the finale exacta. I aimed to go into the championship game with a sweet ticket on both teams, guaranteeing profit.

That exercise compelled me to obtain South Point tickets on Notre Dame over Ohio State, 30-to-1 odds, and Ohio State over Notre Dame, at 25-1. Alas, the Buckeyes and Irish play for the national title Monday night.

“That’s awesome!!!” Long Island handicapper Tom Barton wrote in a text message.

“Looks like you played it 100% correct,” Southern California professional bettor Tommy Lorenzo told me. “Bull’s-eye, well done. TeamRankings is a great tool. I use a lot of its info for my power rankings.

“You’re sitting pretty, my friend.”

The two best teams

Barton entered the week 3-0 in this new playoff, and he sounded as if he’d be fine taking a pass on the championship game.

Unless the point spread ekes up to 10 somewhere. It mostly opened around 9 to 9.5 points in favor of Ohio State. Last Sunday night, it got shaved to 8. Monday afternoon, it hit 7.5 before pumping back to 8.5 by Wednesday.

“I haven’t finished my homework on the championship game,” Barton said. “I tend to lean with the points. The over looks interesting, too, but I’m not sure if I’ll play anything.”

Monday, DraftKings posted a 45.5 total. Wednesday, it hit 46.5, -108 over (or risk $108 to win $100), -112 under. Odds subject to change.

Lorenzo said he felt fortunate to be holding a title ticket on Notre Dame, at 11-1, plus Ohio State at +340.

They represented the two top teams in his power ratings, “so I pulled the trigger.” He added, “I do kick myself, however, for not attacking the championship exacta on those two, given my conviction on those two being the best teams overall.”

More maneuvering

I have more work to do, since I’ve been on Notre Dame since the summer. I’m bullish on Irish coach Marcus Freeman, so I bought a 22-1 Irish title ticket Aug. 31.

It lost early to Northern Illinois but has won 13 in a row, and I nabbed a 30-1 ducat on the Irish on Nov. 21 at the Westgate -SuperBook. So I reap more profit with a Notre Dame victory.

To even that out, I’ll stake positions with Ohio State, likely via in-game maneuvering.

Should the Irish tally an early touchdown, say, the Bucks’ moneyline will shrink closer to even (from around -380), providing an optimal situation to bet on Ohio State and ensure my dividends will be nearly equal, no matter who wins.

I did scramble for a +560 Penn State ticket on New Year’s Eve, just in case, among other moves. I had already bought into the Nittany Lions, at 24-1, on Aug. 31 at William Hill.

There are other debits, and credits. For the semifinals, I played a moneyline parlay of Ohio State to Notre Dame, turning two units into five. In sum, I’ll likely net around 55 units of playoff profit.

Howard’s Will

A lifelong Notre Dame supporter, Lorenzo said he ultimately believes Ohio State will get the victory; the figures back up that outcome.

Ohio State boasts a 0.617 points-per-play ratio over its last three games; Notre Dame’s offense, at 0.374, has been faltering.

Turnovers might be an equalizer, though, as the Irish’s ball-hawking defenders snatched an NCAA-best 32 combined fumbles and interceptions this season. Senior free safety Xavier Watts yanked down six of those picks.

All of which funnels into this column’s final words from Paul Stone, arguably the country’s finest purveyor of college-pigskin prognostications.

He noted the game opening Ohio State -10.5 at Circa Sports, which drew early action on underdog Notre Dame. Wednesday, Vegas had the Buckeyes as consensus 8-point favorites.

From East Texas, Stone said he respected those early waves of cash on the Irish, but he views Ohio State as the “more-complete team” and will back the Buckeyes on the point spread.

“They have found another gear in the playoffs and have too much firepower for Notre Dame, in my opinion,” he said. “Ohio State defeated a talented trifecta of teams — Tennessee, Oregon and Texas — all by 14 points or more.

“The Buckeyes have averaged 7.5 yards per play in those victories, while allowing only 4.2 yards per play.”

The key is Ohio State quarterback Will Howard, the 6-4, 237-pound senior who left Kansas State for Columbus.

“If [he] takes care of the ball and the Irish don’t post a defensive or special-teams touchdown,” Stone said, “I think the Buckeyes win by double digits.”

Ohio’s first Zaxby’s is coming to Greater Cincinnati

Zaxby’s, a popular fried chicken chain, is getting its first Ohio location in Liberty Township.

A 56-seat Zaxby’s restaurant and drive-thru is planned to open at Freedom Pointe, next to Costco. The development, which was initially planned to be a hotel, will also house three other eateries: E+O Kitchen, which has locations at The Banks, Hyde Park and Loveland; Bismarck Donut and Coffee Shop and El Rancho Grande, said Christy Gloyd, Liberty Township’s marketing and events manager.

Costco opened near Interstate 75 on Cox Road in 2022. Construction on the new restaurants starts this summer, Gloyd said.

“We’re just really excited to be growing over there at Freedom Pointe,” she told The Enquirer. “Having Costco as the anchor is huge. Just to have another family-friendly restaurant and have the variety – to have the Zaxby’s and E+O and El Rancho Grande – I think it’s really going to be a nice offering for our residents.”

Atlanta-headquartered Zaxby’s has over 900 locations in 17 states, mostly in the South and Midwest. The chain is known for its chicken fingers and wings, sandwiches and salads. The closest Zaxby’s locations currently open are over an hour away, in Shelbyville, Indiana and Louisville, Kentucky.
