Toxic blue-green algae found in two Nebraska lakes

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The State of Nebraska has issued a health alert for toxic blue-green algae in two lakes.

Harmful algal blooms are affecting the Iron Horse Trail Lake in Pawnee County and Maskenthine Reservoir in Stanton County.

Samples taken earlier this week indicated that the toxin level given off by the algae is higher than normal, according to officials.

The Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy said signs have been posted at the lakes to notify the public.

Recreational boating and fishing are still allowed, but swallowing or any kind of exposure to the water can be dangerous.

Officials said to keep your pets away from the water.

People can still use the public areas for camping, picnics and other outdoor activities.

Social media reacts to Malcolm Simpson committing to Nebraska

Reactions are pouring in after Nebraska football landed a four-star commit. Four-star defensive lineman Malcolm Simpson committed to the Huskers on Sunday night. The Galveston, Texas standout announced his commitment following an official visit to Lincoln.

In addition to his scholarship offer from Nebraska, Simpson also received offers from Baylor, Houston, Kansas, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, SMU, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and USC. Simpson responded on X (formerly Twitter) about choosing Nebraska over other Power 5 schools.

“It breaks my heart that they didn’t believe in me! NEBRASKA DID!”

Simpson stands at 6 feet 4 and 266 pounds. In 17 games over the last two seasons, he recorded 62 tackles and 16 tackles for loss. He also added seven sacks, two forced fumbles, and one pass deflection.

Simpson is Nebraska’s 11th commit in the 2025 recruiting class, and it is the third this month, joining three-star athlete Pierce Mooberry and four-star running back Jamarion Parker.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A two-vehicle crash near Grand Island on Sunday caused damage to both cars and two power lines.

A Merrick County deputy was dispatched to Highway 30 and Bader Park Road in Chapman, which is 12 miles northeast of Grand Island.

An investigation indicated that a van was traveling north on Bader Park Road, according to the Merrick County Sheriff’s Office.

But due to mechanical failure, the van crashed into the rear of a pickup that was stopped at a stop sign.

The crash caused the van to go off the road and into a ditch, colliding with and damaging a power pole.

The van continued to move across Highway 30 and came to a rest after hitting a second power pole.

The sheriff’s office said everyone was wearing seat belts.

There were no injuries reported.
