'This is actually a cool place': Tourists spent record $4.6 billion in Nebraska last year
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) β Is Nebraska a new tourism hot spot?
A new report from Visit Nebraska shows a major increase in travel, providing an economic boost.
Last year, out-of-state visitors spent $4.6 billion in Nebraska, an all-time record.
And since 2019, the number of overnight hotel guests has doubled, with 76% of them coming from out of state.
What happened in 2019? Visit Nebraska began a new marketing strategy that included ideas such as finding out what locations it should be promoting and focusing on attracting out of state visitors.
βTruly itβs just because people have been invited to the state in a way they understand, in a way that makes sense,β said John Ricks, executive director of Visit Nebraska, also known as the Nebraska Tourism Commission.

Ricks says the preconceived notion of Nebraska being a flyover state isnβt true. The commission just had to let people know what the state offers.
After talking with out-of-state visitors, it learned what barriers were keeping people from the Cornhusker State.
βThereβs just a simple awareness problem and a familiarity problem,β Ricks said.

We asked users of the Now Local News App, some who live here and some who donβt, what their favorite spots are in Nebraska.
βI think that going out to western Nebraska is my familyβs favorite place to go,β Melanie Dawkins said. βI donβt think enough Nebraskans make it all the way out there, like to the Panhandle.β
Kimberly Grace, who lives out of state, said she likes visiting the Stuhr Museum at Grand Island.
βYou can learn about the pioneer days, and they have houses that they put on the land where you can go to visit.β

Ricks says to keep this growth going, itβs always going to be about getting the word out.
βThe more people we make aware, the more people who are discovering that, βHey, whatever I heard in the past isnβt true, and this is actually a cool place.ββ
According to Ricks, despite the 2023 numbers just getting released, this yearβs numbers are already beating last yearβs by over 10%.

Where Are Nebraska Fanβs Heads – CarrikerChronicles.com
I recently read an article by Nate McHugh of SB Nation that stated the last two βsure thingsβ to bring Nebraska football back failed. The first βthingβ is back coaching at UCF, and the second βthingβ is now wearing an Oregon uniform. Because these two βsure thingsβ failed, McHugh points to them as reasons for Husker fanβs frustration. But did he miss the third reason? If Iβm not mistaken, the hiring of Matt Rhule felt like one of those βsure thingsβ as well. But after the βmythicalβ year three and disappointment it became clear Rhuleβs hiring was anything but a βsure thingβ for success.
Because of that fans are torn how they feel about Rhule. Iβm one of them. I catch myself saying Rhule is the right guy for Nebraska and then quickly point out that his overall record as a head coach is 66-62. Clearly mediocre compared to Kyle Whittingham (177-88) or James Franklin (104-45). But Rhule hasnβt stayed anywhere long enough to truly establish himself like Whittingham or Franklin either.
See what I mean, Iβm quick to point out his shortcomings but still believe he can make the Huskers relevant again. Where Husker fans struggle is that Rhule has in fact taken us to back-to-back bowl games for the first time since 2015-2016 yet allowed his team to get curb stomped by Penn State, Iowa, and Utah to end the season.
So, fans are leery going into the 2026 season. What are we going to get considering the schedule? The Huskers get Indiana, Washington, and Ohio State at home, and Oregon, Illinois, and Iowa on the road. While no game is a sure win, if they canβt notch victories against Ohio, Bowling Green, North Dakota, Michigan State, Maryland and Rutgers, then weβll once again question if Rhule is the right man. Simply put, the fan base will be disappointed with another 6-6 season. Personally, with the coaching changes and improvement in talent, my expectation is a record of 7-5 or 8-4 on the season.
Tim Verghese of βInside Nebraskaβ got my attention last week when talking about fans giving recruits a negative vibe and possibly influencing their decision to commit to a program. He used Jimbo Fisher at Texas A&M as an example. The fanbase was so negative about Fisher that it made recruits question how secure he was at A&M. Obviously recruits had reason to be worried.
Does that affect how I approach what I write or talk about? It does, but then again, I donβt think so much of myself to think it matters. I see myself as your typical fan. Iβm just someone who shares their thoughts about Husker football. And frankly, like 50% or more of the fans, Iβm torn between being supportive and negativity. Weβve been burned too many times and havenβt seen the things that we need to see to convince us a turnaround is about to happen. Whether itβs offense, defense, or beating the teams they are supposed to beat (Minnesota & Iowa) there just hasnβt been any consistency from Rhuleβs teams. As fans we need to see Rhuleβs teams win the games they are supposed to, then win the close games, and finally beat the teams they arenβt supposed to. Until we see Rhuleβs teams take those steps, there will be doubt and a level of negativity.
As far as recruits are concerned, I donβt see Rhule going anywhere. Heβs safe due to his contract, the investment being made on the stadium, and Trae Taylor making it clear heβs all βNβ as long as Matt Rhule is the head man. He may just be a senior in high school, but donβt think QB Trae Taylor doesnβt play a role here. He does. And Iβm good with that. Taylor has the same expectations as the fans.
And no, those expectations arenβt too high. Iβve been a fan for over fifty years. The standard at Nebraska was set a long time ago. That standard hasnβt changed. Nebraska fans may be up and down on how they feel about Rhule, but they are consistent on their expectations. The standard is the standard and always will be.
