Missouri sending National Guard, state troopers to hurricane-battered Florida – Missourinet

Missouri has answered the call to help Florida with hurricane response efforts.

Gov. Mike Parson has ordered 100 Missouri National Guard members and 15 state troopers to head to Florida and help that state as it gets hammered by another major hurricane. Six highway patrol civilian support staff and five Missouri Disaster Medical Assistance Team members are also going.

“Missouri always stands ready to assist our fellow states in need, and as Governor Ron DeSantis and the people of Florida brace for one of the strongest and potentially most destructive hurricanes in recent memory, Missouri will be there to help them respond and recover,” Parson said. “We will continue to assess how best Missouri can assist Florida in response to this hurricane and other states recently impacted by Hurricane Helene.”

A news release from Parson’s office said the Missouri State Highway Patrol will help Florida without compromising the level of service it provides in Missouri.

The 126-member group is preparing to arrive in Florida once the immediate threats of Hurricane Milton have passed. Depending on the need, the group could be in Florida for five to 20 days or more.

The estimated cost of the deployment is $1.6 million and will be covered primarily by an emergency response fund that the Governor’s Office has the authority to use on its own. Missouri could be reimbursed by the federal government.

Water Safety Tips from Missouri State Highway Patrol – Ozark Radio News

As summer recreation ramps up across Missouri, safety officials are reminding residents that water safety begins long before anyone steps into a lake or river. Understanding the risks of water activities, knowing personal limits, and making responsible choices are the foundation of preventing tragedies on the water.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol and other safety agencies emphasize that natural waterways can present hidden hazards, including strong currents, sudden drop‑offs, and floating debris. Swimmers are urged to stay aware of their surroundings, use life jackets when appropriate, and avoid swimming alone.

Officials say simple precautions—such as recognizing fatigue, monitoring weather conditions, and watching out for others in your group—can make the difference between a fun day on the water and a dangerous situation. As families head outdoors, authorities encourage everyone to treat water safety as a shared responsibility.
