Wayzata Trojans head into Minnesota state baseball tournament undefeated
WAYZATA, Minn. — Baseball is a game of percentages. For Wayzata, the most important number is still at a thousand percent.
“It’s been awesome all around. I mean, it’s really hard to come out here and not have fun with the group of guys we have,” said starting pitcher Riley Leatherman. “And then on top of that we’re winning games and we’re playing hard. So it’s been really fun and really awesome.”
The Trojans are undefeated entering the state tournament. In baseball, that’s unheard of. They have played four one-run games, but always managed to squeak out the win.
“I’ve heard from a lot of people like you kind of need a loss to see what it feels like,” said catcher Michael Reem. “But, I mean, having close games is kind of like the same feeling. You just like kind of know how to adjust to other teams and like what they can bring to us.”
“I’ve been one to say that no team goes 20-0, that’s ridiculous. It doesn’t happen. You’re going to have an off day. You’re going to run into a buzz saw pitcher. There’s going be days where the hitting’s gone. And I think that’s a testament to these guys showing up every day committed to the plan we’ve laid out for them,” said coach Robert Dewitt.
Wayzata has one state title from 2016. Their last time at state was in 2018.
“It’d mean everything. Past 10 weeks we’ve been out here working our butts off every day. So just kind of seeing all that pay off, it’d just be awesome,” Leatherman said.
Aiming for a historic season, and that perfect number.

Minnesota Twins’ Slugger Hits Historic Home Run on Wednesday
Minnesota Twins’ slugger Royce Lewis hit a historic home run on Wednesday as the team put up an offensive explosion against the Colorado Rockies.
At the time of this posting, the Twins lead the Rockies 17-8 after pounding out 24 hits. Lewis is 3-for-5 with the home run, three runs scored and two RBI.
With the homer, Lewis made multiple instances of both team and league history.
First, according to Sarah Langs of MLB.com:
Royce Lewis’ 22 HR are 2 more than any other player in Twins/Senators history in his first 80 career games. today is his 79th
only player with more HR in his first 80 games with the franchise, at any point in a career: Nelson Cruz, 26
And this one, per @CodifyBaseball:
There are only 15 players in history to hit at least 22 home runs in their first 79 MLB games and Royce Lewis is one of them.
The 25-year-old slugger is a former top prospect who has dealt with plenty of injuries over his career already, but when he’s healthy, he is one of the most impactful power hitters in the game.
Lewis hit 15 homers in just 58 games in 2023 and also hit four home runs in six playoff games last year. He has six home runs in just nine games this year. He’s missed most of the season with a leg injury suffered on Opening Day.
Assuming the Twins hold onto this lead, they’ll move to 36-32 on the year, which is good enough for third in the American League Central.

First lady Jill Biden coming to Duluth Thursday
DULUTH — First Lady Jill Biden will visit Duluth this week to help launch the Seniors For Biden-Harris organization in Minnesota.
Her trip to Minnesota is intended to energize older voters in what has become a battleground state this presidential election.
While recent polling in Minnesota has put Biden and former President Donald Trump in a
statistical dead-heat,
a March 2024 Quinnipiac poll showed Biden leading Trump by 8 points nationally among those 65 and older.
“To galvanize this critical voting block in Minnesota, the Biden-Harris campaign is hosting a variety of events with local leaders and seniors to drive home the stakes of the 2024 election, including a campaign event with First Lady Jill Biden in Duluth on Thursday,” Caroline Stonecipher, deputy states communications director for the 2024 Biden-Harris campaign wrote in an email.
The Biden-Harris campaign plans to use the event to contrast the current administration’s legislative and executive successes with what Trump has said publicly.
Specifically, Stonecipher points to Democrats reducing the
cost of prescription drugs
, capping the price of
insulin at $35 for seniors
and strengthening
federal support for Social Security and Medicare
.
The campaign also cited comments Trump made regarding desires to make
cuts to Medicare and Social Security
and
repeal the Affordable Care Act
as an attack on Minnesota’s seniors.
The first lady’s visit comes about a month after
Trump attended a state GOP fundraising event in St. Paul
.
The decision to hold the event in Duluth, the highest population center in northeastern Minnesota, is telling. Once a Democrat stronghold, Republicans have steadily taken over most of the region over the last two decades.
If the state’s GOP can capture a state legislative seat left this year by Rep. Dave Lislegard, DFL-Aurora,
only one Democrat officeholder, Sen. Grant Hauschild, DFL-Hermantown, will be left in the Iron Range
.
