Minnesota police respond to active shooter incident at Super 8 motel, ‘several victims’ reported
Authorities in Cloquet, Minnesota responded to an active shooter situation at Super 8 motel Monday evening.
Police said the area has been secured. Officers on-scene located one deceased person whom they believe to be the shooter.
Earlier police were warning the public to shelter in the place. Police said the shooting unfolded at a Super 8 motel in the area of Big Lake Road and Hwy 33 and has left “multiple victims.”

The number of victims and the extent of their injuries remains unclear at this time.
“If you are currently in the affected area, seek shelter immediately. Go to a room with a lock if possible, close and lock all windows and doors, and remain quiet. Call 911 if you see anything suspicious,” police said in an earlier news release.
Cloquet is in north-central Minnesota, about a 2-hour drive north of Minneapolis.

Springfield’s northside heavily impacted by severe storm I Video
Springfield woke up to buildings at the local airport tossed around, and warped fences, along with significant damage to a northside animal shelter.
SPRINGFIELD – Another severe storm is forecast for central Illinois.
The storm predicted for Saturday afternoon and into Saturday night is expected to be less severe than the ones Springfield experienced on June 11 and June 10.
Most of the state is set to be under a Slight Risk for severe weather, which is a level 2 out of 5, according to an infographic from the National Weather Service out of Lincoln.
The main expected hazard is damaging wind gusts at 60-75 mph, with higher gusts west of Jacksonville.
Scattered hail over 1 inch in diameter is also expected, in addition to possible isolated tornadoes and localized flash flooding.
Storms this past week
Reached by The State Journal-Register, Matt Barnes, who is a meteorologist with the weather service out of Lincoln, said straight line winds at 60-70 mph caused damage in Springfield on the night of June 11.
The storm came in around 7 p.m.
Quite a few trees and power lines were knocked down, Barnes said.
More than 11,000 people lost electrical power across Springfield, according to a news release from City, Water, Light, and Power. The storms snapped poles, bringing trees and limbs down onto power lines, Amber Sabin wrote in the release. Sabin is the director of customer and media relations for the agency.
“With all available resources, including CWLP crews in the field from Electric Operations Troubleshooters, Construction, Substations, Relay, Traffic, Communications, and other support divisions, progress has been made but more work is to be done until all customers are restored power,” Sabin wrote early on June 12.
Tornado undetermined
The weather service on June 12 is sending a damage survey crew to Springfield and other locations in Sangamon County to assess damage from a severe storm that hit the area on June 10. The crew seeks to determine whether the damage may have been caused by a tornado.
A report from NWS is expected this evening that will be available on the NWS homepage or its social media pages.
Rainfall this week
Springfield recorded 1.95″ of rain on June 11, and 0.88″ of rain on June 10.
Some places in central Illinois have seen a “tremendous” amount of rainfall, and scattered flash-flooding may be a concern with upcoming storm activity, Barnes said.

Game 2 (12:30 p.m. CT): No. 7 Penn vs. Fort Wayne Snider
The winners will play at 7 p.m. CT. Lake Central is the last team of the group to win the state title, doing so in 2024.
South (Castle; at Braun Stadium, University of Evansville)
Game 1 (10 a.m. CT): No. 3 Evansville North vs. No. 1 Center Grove
Game 2 (1 p.m. CT): No. 10 Bloomington South vs. North Central
The winners will play at 7 p.m. CT. Evansville North made it to state last season, losing to Valparaiso. Center Grove made it to state in 2023, losing to Penn.
Class 3A
North (LaPorte, at Schreiber Field)
Game 1 (10:30 a.m. CT): NorthWood vs. Norwell
Game 2 (12:30 p.m. CT): No. 1 Andrean vs. No. 5 DeKalb
The winners will play at 7 p.m. CT. Andrean won the 3A state title last season, and has won nine state championships.
South (Jasper, at Ruxer Field)
Game 1 (11 a.m. ET): Providence vs. No. 2 Guerin Catholic
Game 2 (2 p.m. ET): No. 4 Gibson Southern vs. No. 8 Cathedral
The winners will play at 8 p.m. ET. Providence is the last team of the group to make the state championship, winning the 2A state title in 2024.
Class 2A
North (Oak Hill)
Game 1 (11 a.m. ET): Lafayette Central Catholic vs. Bluffton
Game 2 (2 p.m. ET): No. 2 Eastbrook vs. Lakeland
The winners will play at 8 p.m. ET. Lafayette Central Catholic made the 1A state championship in 2024, losing to Barr-Reeve.
South (Lawrence Central)
Game 1 (11 a.m. ET): No. 9 University vs. No. 1 Evansville Mater Dei
Game 2 (2 p.m. ET): Heritage Christian vs. Sullivan
The winners will play at 8 p.m. Evansville Mater Dei made it to state last year, losing to Boone Grove.
Class 1A
North (Lafayette Jefferson, at Loeb Stadium)
Game 1 (11 a.m. ET): Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian vs. North Miami
Game 2 (2 p.m. ET): No. 10 Rossville vs. No. 1 Kouts
The winners will play at 7:30 p.m. ET. Kouts made it to state last year, losing to Lutheran.
South (Mitchell)
Game 1 (11 a.m. ET): Hauser vs. North Daviess
Game 2 (1 p.m. ET): Greenwood Christian vs. No. 4 Northeast Dubois
The winners will play at 7 p.m. ET. Hauser is the last team of the group to make it to state, back in 2005, when it lost to Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian.
What to know about the 2026 Iowa governor conventions
A detailed look at the coming Republican and Democratic state conventions as candidates Zach Lahn and Rob Sand seek to be Iowa’s next governor.
On June 13, the Iowa Republican and Democratic parties are each holding conventions to affirm their candidates in the race to elect the state’s next governor.
Here’s what Iowans should know as the conventions begin.
What is a political convention?
Iowa holds a convention every two years to nominate candidates for national and statewide offices. At this convention, the candidates officially accept nominations for their candidacy, announce their platform and begin their campaign.
In addition to advancing the race for governor, several chosen members from each party will speak at the event.
Who are Iowa’s governor candidates?
Democrat Rob Sand and Republican Zach Lahn are set to accept their party’s nominations for the gubernatorial race, with each candidate announcing their platform in their acceptance speech.
They earned the nomination with their respective victories in the June primary.
Sand chose Crawford County Supervisor and rural farmer Dave Muhlbauer as his running mate June 8.
On June 11, Lahn chose state Rep. Derek Wulf, a fourth-generation farmer and rancher, as his lieutenant governor pick. Iowans will vote to decide the state’s next governor later this year on Nov. 3.
What is a lieutenant governor?
The lieutenant governor is the second-in-command to the governor and first in the line of succession.
What can Iowans expect from the Republican convention?
The 2026 Iowa Republican Party Convention takes place June 13 at the Horizon Events Center in Clive.Speakers will include U.S. Representative Ashley Hinson, who is running for Sen. Joni Ernst’s seat after Ernst decided not to seek reelection.
Former Iowan Republican Co-Chair David Oman hopes the Iowans who attend the convention will “find something compelling” about Lahn.
“Our nominee is not well-known. I hope (Iowans) take a look at this fresh face, new face, who won the primary,” Oman said. “Have an open mind and spend the next five months learning more.”
Oman hopes Lahn’s victory in the primary will unite the party, starting with the convention.
“The primary we just experienced was grueling in some respects. The question was, ‘Could anybody get a 35%?’ That tells you that the party was looking for, and needed, a candidate that could bring the party together. We need this coming convention.”
What can Iowans expect from the Democratic convention?
The 2026 Iowa Democratic Party Convention will be held at Roosevelt High School this June 11. The doors will open at 9 a.m., with the event expected to begin an hour later. The convention is expected to end around noon.
Speakers include Democratic Party chair Rita Hart, candidate for U.S. Senate Josh Turek and candidate for Secretary of State Ryan Peterman. Hart said she looks forward to “bringing the family together.”
Democratic Party Communications Director Paige Godden said she knows Iowans are excited to meet and hear from Muhlbauer Saturday.
“I know people are really fired up, so that should be definitely one of the highlights,” Godden said.
Hart said she and other candidates have been talking and listening to Iowans’ concerns with the cost of living, one-party control, education and cancer rates. She hopes Iowans can look to Democrats for unity after this convention.
“When people respect one another, no matter what letter is behind their name — that ability to work across the aisle to have good ideas and help those ideas become reality,” Hart said. “That’s how we help everyone in the state of Iowa, and that’s really important to Iowans.”
