MINNEAPOLIS — A Twin Cities father is asking for community members to work together to make sure what happened to his child never happens again.

His 12-year-old is home from the hospital on Wednesday night they were shot in a stolen car with three other children in north Minneapolis last weekend.

“They ain’t no bad kids. They just misguided nobodies listening to them, but now that they got our attention what are we going to do with it?” the father said. 

He added it’s time for the community to focus on the well-being of youth. He wants to speak out, but is concerned about the safety of his family. Because whoever shot at the car has not been arrested, WCCO is not naming or showing his face.

“For me it hit home. I go and talk to kids all the time but when it hit home, it’s like, I was so unconscious to my kid focusing on other peoples kid,” he said.

He sees his child getting in that car as a cry for attention in an area where there is no community center, no programming, no skating rink or arcade.

He says kids know and talk about the fact that there are no consequences for their actions. Because of that, he says he and other parents have been asking for help.

“The families been saying what can we do and all y’all saying is it comes from the house, it comes from the inside. You can have a kid whose family is perfect, you can get whatever you want when you want it, they still got to go to that bus stop they still got to go to that park,” he said.

He is calling on all parents to work together and hopes Zion Baptist Church’s Wellness Collaborative can help.

Marquese Armstrong, the deacon of Zion Baptist Church, believes what’s needed to change the direction of young people lies within community.

“Members of the wellness collaborative are here, we have mentorship program, we have life coaching, we have therapy we have rights of passage programs for not just the children but for the parents as well,” Armstrong explained.

This parent hopes the village steps up and helps provide what’s needed to help kids be kids again. 

The father says the 12-year-old was supposed to be spending the night at a friend’s house.

He believes neighbors shouldn’t be afraid to speak up about kids behaving badly, and other parents should accept that help.

MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) – Not quite “Detroit style” or Chicago’s infamous deep dish, Minneapolis is home to several notable pizza places that are gaining even more attention thanks to a recent ranking by consumer-review site Yelp.

Top spots

Yelp has released the “ultimate guide to the Midwest’s best pizza” as part of its Top 100 Pizza Spots in the Midwest list.

On it, several Minneapolis-based restaurants made the cut.

Survey results

Of Minnesota pizza spots, Young Joni ranked the highest on the survey, taking No. 25 on the best of 100 list.

Not surprisingly, owner and founder Ann Kim won a James Beard Foundation Award in 2019, which recognizes the top chefs in the U.S. She was a semifinalist in the Midwest category in 2017. 

Kim also runs Pizzeria Lola and Hello Pizza in Minneapolis. The former places also ranked on the list, coming in at No. 80.

Deviating from the Italian cuisine, Boludo – described as a “taste of Buenos Aires” while also offering empanadas on its menu – ranked at No. 39. The restaurant opened in 2018 in the Kingfield neighborhood of Minneapolis, but has since expanded to downtown and Como.

The final Minneapolis-centric spot on the list offers a unique pizza variation – cooked in a wood-fired, open-facing oven, Element Wood Fire Pizza, ranked at No. 89. It can be found in the St. Anthony West neighborhood of northeast Minneapolis.

More Minnesota spots

Also representing the Twin Cities, Mama’s Pizza in St. Paul made the list at No. 27.

In the suburbs, Brianno’s Deli-Italia in Eagan (No. 82) and Tono Pizzeria + Cheesesteaks in Maplewood (No. 89) were honored as well.

Wisconsin pizzas among the best

Several places from the “cheeshead state” also made the list.

Novanta in Madison (No. 49), Wells Brothers Restaurant in Racine (No. 65), San Giorgio Pizzeria Napoletana in Milwaukee (No. 86) and Ang an Eddies in Fond du Lac (No. 95) all cracked the top 100.

Wednesday’s forecast 

It’s a beautiful Wednesday with dew points in the 50s and temperatures in the mid to upper 70s. The Twin Cities metro has a daytime high of 78 degrees and overnight lows in the 60s. 

Expect a few passing clouds and lingering haze from wildfire smoke in the atmosphere, which will push off to the north by Thursday. 

Overall, it’s nice and quiet as we head through the day on Wednesday. Enjoy the abundance of sunshine, with some exceptions across western Minnesota, which will have more cloud coverage. 

Looking ahead 

The Minnesota State Fair starts on Thursday, and things look relatively mild. The metro area will experience some cloud coverage and a high of 79 degrees. 

Isolated storms are possible late Wednesday night into Thursday morning in western Minnesota. The storms will try to push east but could fall apart in central Minnesota by mid-morning. 

The isolated storms redevelop late Thursday night and into early Friday morning, which may include the Twin Cities metro area. The rain clears up by the afternoon, and things become much more humid and muggy. 

Early showers are possible on Friday morning, but not everyone will get wet. Things clear out Friday afternoon, but the humidity returns. Expect a high of around 80 degrees in the metro area.

The weekend is far more uncomfortable with increased humidity and heat. Temperatures peak on Sunday and Monday with highs near 90 degrees.
