Condo development with 15 townhomes planned for downtown Milwaukee’s northern edge
A local developer wants to build 15 townhome-style condos on downtown Milwaukee’s northern edge.
Cirrus Property Group LLC is seeking a zoning change for the properties at 1524, 1540 and 1546 North Jefferson Street, according to a new Common Council file. The council could consider that ordinance in September.
Cirrus plans to build three-story, 2,000-square-foot townhomes on the site, said John Riordan, founder and chief executive officer.
The three-bedroom condos would include terraces as well as possible rooftop amenity space, Riordan told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Cirrus hopes to break ground by April, he said, with the condos taking eight to 10 months to construct. The listed sale prices haven’t yet been determined.
The firm hopes to take advantage of a lack of condo development in Milwaukee since the 2006 housing bubble burst, Riordan said.
“There’s really no supply there,” he said.
Condos within short walk of Fiserv Forum, other attractions
The site is attractive because it’s within walking distance of such attractions as East Brady Street and Fiserv Forum, as well as near a variety of downtown workplaces, Riordan said.
The proposal surfaces just over three weeks after the Historic Third Ward Architectural Review Board granted approval for architect and developer Peter Renner’s long-delayed plans to develop 13 three-story townhomes at 620 E. Summerfest Place (formerly known as East Polk Street).
Renner said construction might begin next spring.
The Jefferson Street development would replace a former child care center that would be demolished. A previous plan by Apacchi Capital to develop a three-story, 10,500-square-foot commercial building and four townhomes on that site was dropped in 2022.

MILWAUKEE — Newly released video captures a shootout between Milwaukee police and a suspect inside a convenience store last month.
Video shows the suspect, 22-year-old Jayuntae Gregory, shooting at police with an assault rifle back on July 17 at the Citgo near Sherman and Capitol. Police returned fire.
In a press conference last month, Police Chief Jeffrey Norman said the situation continued to escalate from there.
“The suspect ran out of the store and fired numerous shots at officers, at which time several officers returned fire, subsequently striking the suspect,” Norman said.

The suspect then ran out of the gas station and again shot at officers. Officers then shot and injured Gregory and took him into custody.
Gregory was also wanted in connection to a double shooting that happened the day before. No officers were hurt.
The officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative duty pending an investigation.

Milwaukee police are investigating a robbery crew that has targeted the city’s Riverwest and Upper East Side neighborhoods.
In an email statement, Milwaukee Police Department said that a robbery crew had targeted those neighborhoods and they had arrested an 18-year-old and a 17-year-old in connection to it. Police said they are looking at the crew for several robberies in the area.
The robberies also occurred as a series of July 24 robberies in the downtown area during a Northwestern Mutual event.
The police said in a statement that those robberies occurred around midnight on the 300 block of South 2nd Street, the 200 block of West National Avenue and the 500 block of North Plankinton Avenue.
Local television station WITI-TV (FOX6) reported that a police captain had asked a private security group for help in response to the crew in an email.
Milwaukee police declined to immediately make the email available to the Journal Sentinel. The Journal Sentinel filed an open records request for the email.
Milwaukee police said it was currently unknown if the crew targeting Riverwest and Upper East Side is tied to the downtown robberies.
Authorities said they are not sharing further details on the robbery crew as they continue to seek additional suspects. Charges have not been filed, police said.
This year there have been 1,121 robberies, through July 31, according to Milwaukee police data. That’s a 6% increase from last year and 7% from 2022.

Scattered storms expected in Milwaukee through afternoon, evening
Following Wednesday’s heat that reached a heat index near 100 degrees, southeast Wisconsin is expected to see scattered storms and rain Thursday afternoon and into the night.
While there could be some scattered storms through the morning, the bulk of potential stormy weather will come later in the afternoon and through the evening, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Michaela Heeren.
“With these storms, we do have a lot of instability, so there is that potential for some gusty winds and hail with the stronger storms,” Heeren said.
Going into the afternoon, there is a line of storms developing in central Wisconsin moving southeastward. The storms won’t be a “fast moving line,” but more of a “broken line,” affecting areas on and off throughout the afternoon and evening hours, Heeren said.
The storms are expected in the Milwaukee area around 5 p.m. but could arrive as early as 3 p.m. Strong storms exit the area around 9 p.m., but there is a chance of scattered storms through Friday morning.
Heeren said precipitation would likely be “closer to a tenth of an inch,” but that any of the storms have the possibility for heavy rain potential and an “inch is definitely in the realm of possibilities.”
