The top-ranked Wisconsin men’s hockey team has dropped into second-place in the Big Ten.
The Badgers lost to No. 11 Michigan State, 4-2, Friday night in front of 6,555 at Munn Arena in East Lansing, Michigan. In addition to snapping a six-game winning streak, the loss left Wisconsin (4-1 – 12 points) one point behind the Spartans (4-0-1 – 13 points) in the conference standings.
The teams play the second game of the set at 5 p.m. Saturday.
Senior Owen Lindmark scored his fifth goal of the season and freshman Sawyer Scholl recorded the second of his career in the loss. Senior goaltender Kyle McClellan recorded 38 saves.
Wisconsin, which is 9-2 overall, played catchup most of the night. After allowing a goal during the final minute of the first period, Lindmark scored off a pass from Jack Horbach at the 7-minute 41-minute mark of the first second period to tie the game.
The Spartans, however, responded with two goals in the final 5 minutes of the period gain a 3-1 edge. That lead proved enough for Michigan State (9-3-1) to extend its unbeaten streak to five games.
