Michigan woman accused of smuggling drugs, SIM cards into Upper Peninsula prison
(CBS DETROIT) — A 41-year-old Redford woman is accused of smuggling drugs and SIM cards into an Upper Peninsula prison.
Michigan State Police say Frances Ramirez-Huerta tried to smuggle drugs into the Chippewa Correctional Facility in Kincheloe in Chippewa County. She was arrested after an investigation by the Michigan Department of Corrections.
On Jan. 11, corrections officers became suspicious after witnessing a prisoner behave unusually during a visitation.
Surveillance video allegedly showed Ramirez-Huerta, who was visiting an inmate, conceal the items in the waistband of her pants, which she discreetly gave to the prisoner.
When prison officers searched the inmate, they found a bundle containing 140 suboxone strips and a second bundle with seven grams of marijuana flower in packaging. In addition, two SIM cards for cellphones were also found.
Ramirez-Huerta is charged with furnishing a cellphone to a prison, furnishing contraband to a prisoner in prison, controlled substance-maintaining a drug house, controlled substance-delivery/manufacture of marijuana and controlled substance-creation/delivery of an analogue.
She was lodged in the Chippewa County Jail and given a $1,000 bond. Ramirez-Huerta is due back in court on Jan. 27.
Earlier this month, a Michigan corrections officer and another man were charged with attempting to smuggle more than $400,000 worth of drugs into the Kinross Correctional Facility. Troopers say Andre Taylor, 59, of Clinton Township, and Edward King, 57, of Detroit, tried to smuggle illegal drugs into the Kinross facility where Taylor was working on a temporary assignment.

Donovan Edwards gives shout out to Name, Image, Likeness (NIL) collective
Donovan Edwards leaves the University of Michigan as a legend, earning the nickname “Big Game Don” during his time in Ann Arbor. He could go from having a multiple game slump to scoring explosive touchdowns in the biggest moments of the biggest games. Whether it was back breaking long run touchdowns against Ohio State, or in the National Championship game against Washington, Edwards just knew when to turn it up.
While he never achieved the Heisman level season that he envisioned when he signed with the Wolverines, he leaves as a 3x Big Ten Champion, National Champion and 4-time winner of ‘The Game’. He also learned how to market himself and earn off of his success while in Ann Arbor. Edwards was a member of the NIL collective Champions Circle, and he recently gave them a shout out of appreciation.
The collective helped Edwards partner with businesses and organizations that he valued. Some of those organizations include the Michigan Army National Guard, Celsius, and Wolverine Boots. Edwards was a natural ambassador for any brand he partnered with. He was armed with an electric smile and the ability to connect with anyone that came across him. He did everything the right way while in Ann Arbor and was more prone to hang out with his dog than be out on the town.
Edwards now looks to take his talents to the next level, and he certainly has the ability to fill a role in the NFL. Thanks to his partnership with Champions Circle, he’ll certainly know how to market himself moving forward after life at Michigan.

Michigan State come into Saturday on an exciting roll of convincing wins. After beating up Penn State 82-61 on Wednesday night, the Spartans have won four straight games, all coming by 10 or more points. In fact, all of the team’s five Big Ten wins have been by double digits. However, MSU needs to work on finding the consistency to hang with best in the conference if they want to get over the hump and be conference champions.
Julia Ayrault leads Michigan State by averaging 15.4 points per game, while Moira Joiner is putting up 14.7 per contest.
A similar story was being told at Michigan, as the Wolverines won three straight games by double-digits. However, that trend was put to an end this Wednesday, but not an entirely bad way. Taking on No. 23 Minnesota, Syla Swords and company had to grind out a 70-65 win, bolstering their winning streak to four games.
The Wolverines are lead offensively by Swoards and Olivia Olson. Olson is scoring an average of 16 points per game, with Swords right behind her averaging 15.8.
The Spartans sit tied for fifth in the Big Ten, with Michigan tied for seventh.
Similar to the men’s side of things, the Spartans lead the all-time series between the two rivals. In the first 100 meetings, MSU is 75-25 against Michigan, with MSU sweeping the regular-season series last year.
