Power and Light Apartments in downtown Kansas City evacuated due to standoff
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Police responded to a standoff with an alleged armed subject at an apartment complex in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, on Tuesday afternoon.
The incident happened in the 100 block of E. 14th Street, near the Power and Light District, according to KCPD spokeswoman Donna Drake.
Drake said a decision was later made to end the standoff so the situation didn’t escalate. The subject had not threatened to harm themselves or anyone else.
A preliminary investigation indicated the standoff started after a disturbance between a tenant and an apartment manager.
The disturbance escalated and the manager was assaulted.
KCPD officers responded to the scene just after 2 p.m. and made contact the with the subject, who appeared to brandish a gun. A standoff was later called.
The subject did not point a weapon at officers or anyone else, Drake said.
Tenants of the apartment were evacuated and no injuries were reported.
People downtown were asked to avoid the area.
Drake said KCPD’s Crisis Intervention Squad is now in contact with the subject’s family to decide the best course of action.
NorthPoint Development, who owns and operates the Power and Light Apartments, released a statement on the incident.
At approximately 2:30 PM today, June 6th, our property management team responded to a noise complaint at the Power & Light Apartments, which led to local law enforcement being called to the scene. Law enforcement officers were able to de-escalate the situation and bring in their negotiator response team to offer help to the resident. No injuries were reported.
Our top priority is always our residents and team members. We are continuing to do everything we can to assist local law enforcement and our residents.
