Indiana couple left kids in 125-degree heat for over 40 minutes while shopping at Walmart: police

An Indianapolis couple were charged with child neglect after leaving their two children locked in their SUV with no air conditioning with temperatures in the mid-90s while they shopped at Walmart, police said.

Lawrence police estimate the temperature inside the Ford SUV had reached 125 degrees when the children were discovered by a passerby in the parking lot who dialed 911 around 7 p.m., per court documents reviewed by Fox 59.

Parents Mirianne Pierre and Watson Joseph, both 31, were arrested and booked into the Marion County jail on two counts of neglect of a dependent, the outlet reported. They have both posted bond since their Monday arrest, according to online records.

One of the two children was “sweating profusely from the head and neck” when they were rescued, while the other appeared dazed, according to the outlet. Police said both were placed in Department of Child Services custody.

Both parents arrived at their car around the same time as police and were “confused about what was going on,” according to a probable cause affidavit reviewed by Law & Crime.

Pierre reportedly told detectives she was in the store for a “little bit” and Joseph joined her inside to help her carry some heavy items. She claimed that her SUV ran for an additional five minutes without the key nearby, according to the documents.

But surveillance footage reviewed by police revealed that the couple walked inside the store around 6:27 p.m. — the children were left alone for 45 minutes, per the affidavit.

Paramedics examined the children at the scene and both were fine, other than unusually high blood pressure for their ages, police said.

Although the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) didn’t investigate the case, they reminded parents to never leave their children unattended in vehicles.

“We never want to leave our kids unattended, much less when it’s hot outside. The moment we shut that engine off the temperatures rise really rapidly,” said IMPD Sgt. Anthony Patterson. “Once those doors are shut the temperatures rise really quickly. So you may feel it’s only a couple minutes, but to the person or child inside the car, that’s an eternity. It gets really hot really fast.”

DETROIT (AP) — Cristopher Sánchez struck out seven in seven innings, Bryce Harper and J.T. Realmuto doubled and the Philadelphia Phillies ended the Detroit Tigers’ six-game winning streak with a 4-2 victory Saturday night.

The Phillies are 45-25 since snapping a 10-game losing streak April 25 and have the second-highest winning percentage in that span.

Sánchez (11-4) allowed two runs on 10 hits, bouncing back from a career-worst outing against Kansas City. Jonathan Bowlan threw a hitless eighth, and Jhoan Duran had a 1-2-3 ninth for his 24th save.

Trea Turner’s sacrifice fly got the Phillies on the board in the third inning. Derek Hill prevented Zach McKinstry from driving in the tying run with a spectacular diving catch.

Realmuto had a two-run double in the fourth to extend the lead.

The Tigers got one back on Eduardo Valencia’s solo homer in the fifth.

Casey Mize (4-6) worked 5 2/3 innings for Detroit.

IndyCar drivers make a pit stop at the Milwaukee Mile

WEST ALLIS, Wis.– IndyCar racers test-drive at the Milwaukee Mile ahead of the August doubleheader.

The IndyCar Series has back-to-back races at the track on August 29 and August 30.

Racers had the rare opportunity to practice laps in West Allis on Wednesday, July 8.

“It’s a tough place; it’s a very tough course,” said four-time IndyCar series champion Álex Palou. “I feel like every time I come here, the car and the driving feels very different.”

Palou currently leads the 2026 IndyCar Series in points and will race the Milwaukee Mile next month.

“It just makes everything super close, especially being the second to last event of the year and having two races ” said Palou. “If you have a good weekend, it’s great, but if you don’t, you can be crying after it.”

The IndyCar Series consists of 18 races across the United States and Canada.

Milwaukee is the only doubleheader race on the schedule, making the event worth double the points and potentially swinging the series championship leaderboard.

“It’s one of those tracks that you need a car that gives you a lot of confidence, but you need to have confidence in this place as well.”

IndyCar driver Josef Newgarden is eager to get back on the Milwaukee Mile.

“It’s the most historic racetrack that you’ll find in North America, and it’s very historic when you think of IndyCar,” said Newgarden. “I’ve always wanted to be back here.”

According to the Wisconsin State Fair website, the Milwaukee Mile is the oldest operating motor speedway in the world.

The first automobile race was held there in 1903 on a dirt track. Cars similar to IndyCars first competed on the West Allis track in 1933.

“I love this market,” said Newgarden. “I think Milwaukee’s a great place to race and we’ve got a good fan base here.”

The IndyCar Series raced at the Milwaukee Mile annually from 2004 to 2015. The track did not host the series from 2016 through 2023. IndyCar returned in 2024 and has raced there each year since.

The Milwaukee Mile will host the IndyCar Series for the Snap-on Makers and Fixers 250 on Saturday, August 29, and the Snap-on Milwaukee Mile 250 on Sunday, August 30.
