Illinois State Police urge safety during ‘100 Deadly Days of Summer’
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – The 100 Deadly Days of Summer historically marks an increase in traffic fatalities between Memorial Day and Labor Day, particularly when it comes to teen drivers.
The National Road Safety Foundation reports a dangerous spike of about 20% in teen traffic fatalities during the summer months, with an average of about seven deaths per day happening during the time between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Illinois State Police say they will heavily enforce traffic laws to keep drivers safe.
“The Illinois State Police has identified four things that either contribute to or cause fatal traffic crashes and personal injury traffic crashes. In no particular order, those things are distracted driving, driving under the influence, occupant restraint, and speeding,” said Christopher Watson, Illinois State Police public information officer.
Watson also touches on why it’s teens we see a spike in for traffic fatalities.
“It’s everyone, but classically teens tend to make more poor decisions when it comes to driving mostly because of inexperience… you know once they start gaining a level of experience they start making better decisions,” explained Watson.
If you are in a vehicle that is being driven dangerously, safety experts encourage you to speak up, you could save a life.

Plainfield, Illinois, ice cream shop launches
An ice cream shop in Plainfield, Illinois, has launched an anti-bullying campaign after an incident with a customer.
Hazel Marie’s is located at 24030 Lockport St. in Plainfield. Owner Tammy Barvian said on Memorial Day, a customer crossed a line.
“We had a customer that felt that it was OK and appropriate to throw — not toss, but throw — a banana split at the back of one of our employees’ heads and hit her in the back of the head,” said Barvian. “Not going to be tolerated here. Not something that we’re going to allow.”
On Sunday, the store asked people to bring bananas and wear yellow for $5 Sundays. The owners said they wanted to raise $10,000 for their Bananas Against Bullies campaign.
According to the Patch, Plainfield police officers responded to the scene after the incident on Monday, May 25, but could not identify the man involved.
The employee who was hit was doing OK days later.
