Detroit Tigers Call Up Two Intriguing Relievers
The Detroit Tigers were busy at this year’s deadline, most notably dealing Jack Flaherty.
However, after also trading away Andrew Chafin, the Tigers are replacing him with two different relievers. Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports the team is calling up Brenan Hanifee and Sean Guenther to fill those bullpen duties.
Hanifee made his Major League debut in 2023 with Detroit, pitching in three games in September. He threw five innings, mostly in mop up duty, while allowing three runs and striking out three batters. He was sent back to Triple-A for 2024 season where his numbers are better than they might look on the surface.
The 26-year-old has made 34 appearances for Triple-A Toledo where he’s thrown 47 innings with one save. The right hander has posted a 5.17 ERA, but his 3.86 FIP suggests that he is getting pretty unlucky. He has also shown the ability to miss bats, posting a 10.1 K/9. Maybe most notably, Hanifee has a good feel for control, walking only 2.7 batters per nine this season.
His good control is nothing new, as he walked just 3.0 batters per nine in 90.1 innings in 2023. However, his strikeouts are up from last season’s mark of 8.3 per nine, suggesting his ceiling could continue to get higher.
Guenther is the other addition to the Tigers’ bullpen.
The 28-year-old hasn’t pitched in the Majors since appearing in 14 games for the Miami Marlins in 2019. With them, he threw 20.1 innings while striking out 15, walking 10 and posting a 9.30 ERA.
Since his time in the big leagues, the lefty pitched in the Marlins system in 2021 before missing 2022 with an arm injury and being claimed by Detroit that offseason.
Guenther pitched across three levels in 2023, pitching in 39 games where he posted a 3.55 ERA while striking out 62 and only walking 12 in 50.2 innings. This allowed him to be assigned to Triple-A after a Spring Training invite in 2024, where he has been a work horse so far.
In 44.1 innings this year, he has posted a 3.86 ERA to go along with a 9.3 K/9 and just a 2.8 walk per nine rate. Like Hanifee, he has a good feel for the strikezone and doesn’t walk many batters.
With the loss of Chafin, who had been the Tigers most reliable reliever, they were in need of help in the bullpen.
Now, both Hanifee and Guenther will get an audition to earn a role in a Tigers bullpen that is in need of an upgrade.

Boston Red Sox vs. Detroit Tigers Game Delayed on Monday
Original Story: The Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers clash on Monday night was anything but smooth.
Boston got an excellent start from Payton Tolle, who went seven innings in the contest and allowed just one base hit and two earned runs. After a five-run seventh inning, Boston took a 5-2 lead. Then, in the top of the eighth inning, the consest was delayed due to inclement weather.
This story will be updated as information surfaces.
Updated: The weather certainly played a role in Monday’s contest. Midway through the contest, fans at Comerica Park had to take cover due to lightning in the area.

The rain came fast and hard, but the action continued for a few innings afterward.
Eventually, with the crowd looking empty, the action started to get a bit sloppy. Tolle allowed the two earned runs on just one base hit. That’s in part due to two errors from the Red Sox behind him in the sixth inning. Detroit scored both of its runs in the sixth inning. Fortunately, the Red Sox followed suit with five runs of their own in the seventh inning in equally weird fashion. Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran smashed a homer to left field that on the broadcast looked like it was going to be a pop-up to left field, then all of a sudden it was out.

Finally, Marcelo Mayer came through with a base hit to drive in the fifth run of the inning for Boston.

Then, in the eighth inning, the contest was put into a rain delay with the weather getting worse.
“The game is currently in a delay due to inclement weather in the area. We will continue to provide updates,” the Tigers announced on X.
At the time, Enmanuel De Jesus was on the mound for Detroit with Andruw Monasterio at the plate with one ball. As of writing, neither the Red Sox nor the Tigers has provided an estimated time for the resumption of the contest, although the grounds crew did start to move the tarp on the field. When the game does resume, Boston will be just six outs away from getting back in the win column. For Boston, it’s a game it certainly needs to win and currently is in a good position to do so. But, again, it’s not over.

Gas prices up 84 cents in Michigan from last week, up 76 cents in metro Detroit
DEARBORN, Mich. (WXYZ) — Gas prices in Michigan are up 84 cents from last week in the state of Michigan, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA).
Michigan drivers are now paying an average of $4.86/gallon for regular unleaded fuel, which is 99 cents more than this last month and $1.64 more than this time last year.

“Michigan drivers are feeling the squeeze as gas prices spike 85 cents in one week,” said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson, AAA-The Auto Club Group. “Until oil prices ease and gasoline stocks rebuild, drivers may continue to feel pressure from higher prices at the pump.”
Metro Detroit’s current average is $4.83 per gallon, up 76 cents since last week and up $1.66 from this time last year.

How Detroit Pistons Completed Playoff Series Comeback With Game 7 Win Over Magic
The playoff comeback of the ages is complete. The Detroit Pistons defeated the Orlando Magic 116-94 in Game 7 on Sunday in front of what was an energetic crowd at Little Caesars Arena, advancing in the NBA playoffs.
The Pistons are the second Eastern Conference team in this year’s NBA playoffs to come back from a 3-1 deficit and win the series. The Philadelphia 76ers also rallied from a 3-1 deficit to upset the Boston Celtics.
The Pistons’ first-round win over the Magic is their first playoff series win since the 2007-08 season, and now they’ll advance to the Eastern Conference Semifinals and look to reach one step closer to reaching their goal of winning their first NBA championship since 2004.
Not only did the Pistons repeat history from 2003 by rallying from a 3-1 deficit in the first round against the Orlando Magic as the Eastern Conference’s No. 1 seed, but the comeback showed their resolve as a team that could provide a huge confidence booster for the group heading into the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
Tobias Harris’ Remarkable Game 7 Performance
While Cade Cunningham led the Pistons in scoring with 32 points, Tobias Harris put on arguably the best performance of his career in the playoffs. Throughout this series and in the Pistons’ three elimination games, Harris has been an unsung hero for Detroit. Without his contributions, the first-round comeback likely never would have happened for the Pistons.
In the Pistons’ win, Harris scored 30 points, nine rebounds, and two assists on 11-of-18 shooting from the field, including five three-pointers. It was a remarkable performance for a player who, in the past, faced criticism for his postseason contributions. Entering Sunday’s matchup, Harris was 0-2 in Game 7’s, and he ended that streak in a big way.
In addition to Cunningham and Harris 30-point playoff performances, Jalen Duren (15 points) and Duncan Robinson (10 points) also scored in double figures for the Pistons.
For the Magic, Paolo Banchero led Orlando in the loss, scoring 38 points, nine rebounds, and six assists. While not as efficient offensively as Banchero was in Game 7, Desmond Bane (16 points) and Wendell Carter Jr. (13 points) also scored in double figures for the Magic.
What’s Next For Pistons?
The Pistons currently await their opponent in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, as they’ll face either the Toronto Raptors or the Cleveland Cavaliers. Game 1 of the Pistons Eastern Conference Semifinals series is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday night at Little Caesars Arena, with the game broadcast on Peacock.
