Dalon King Returns to Cleveland State Men’s Basketball Staff as Assistant Coach – Cleveland State University

Cleveland, OH-Head coach Rob Summers has announced the addition of Dalon King as an assistant coach on his inaugural Cleveland State men’s basketball staff. King brings eight seasons of experience in a variety of roles to Cleveland.
“We’re excited to welcome back Dalon King to Cleveland State and our basketball staff,” said Coach Summers. “Dalon has been part of winning programs at both Missouri and here at Cleveland State, and his background in scouting, analytics, and basketball operations brings tremendous value to our team. He’s played a key role in NCAA Tournament runs, conference championships, and program turnarounds. Dalon is insightful, detail-oriented, and committed to excellence—exactly the kind of person we want in our program as we continue to raise the bar.”
King is very familiar with Cleveland State and the men’s basketball program as he returns for his second stint on staff. He spent five seasons with the program from 2018-22 including his final three seasons under former head coach Dennis Gates. King served as a manager and graduate assistant before being elevated to Assistant Director of Basketball Operations in his final season. He helped the Vikings to the 2021 Horizon League title and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
“I’m incredibly grateful and excited to return to Cleveland State as an assistant coach,” added King. “This program holds a special place in my heart—it’s where I began my journey in college basketball and where I’ve been fortunate to be part of championship teams and special moments. I want to thank the administration and Coach Summers for this opportunity. I’m ready to continue to build on the tradition and success of Cleveland State basketball. Go Vikes!”
Most recently King spent the past three seasons working under Gates at the University of Missouri. He served his first two seasons as Coordinator of Scouting and Analytics and most recently as Director of Basketball Operations this past season. King helped the Tigers to two NCAA Tournament appearances during his time at Mizzou. In the 2022-23 season MU recorded its highest win total in 11 years with 25 victories and closed the season with its first NCAA Tournament win in 13 years. Overall King has been a part of two regular season titles and one tournament title in his career.
“Cleveland State is getting one of the bright young minds in college basketball,” said Coach Gates. “Dalon King is a tireless worker and someone who’s earned his opportunity through his dedication and humility. Watching his growth from a graduate assistant to a key member of our staff has been incredibly rewarding. He’s prepared for this next chapter and will be an immediate asset to the program.”
King earned his bachelor’s degree from Cleveland State in history in 2019 and went on to earn a master’s degree in sports management from CSU in 2021. He is joined in Cleveland by his girlfriend Toni Zeigler.

Michael Hunter Joins Cleveland State Men’s Basketball Staff as Assistant Coach – Cleveland State University

Cleveland, OH-Head men’s basketball coach Rob Summers has announced the addition of Michael Hunter to his inaugural coaching staff at Cleveland State as an assistant coach. Hunter brings over a decade of head coach and assistant coach experience to his new role in Cleveland.
“We’re excited to welcome Michael Hunter to our basketball staff,” said Coach Summers. “As a former head coach with deep roots in the great state of Ohio, Michael brings a unique blend of leadership, experience, and regional insight that will be invaluable to our program. His understanding of the game, ability to connect with players, and success recruiting in Ohio and beyond reflect the values we prioritize—commitment, integrity, and a team-first mentality. He’s a tremendous addition to our team.”
Hunter comes to Cleveland State after two successful seasons as the head coach at NAIA Shawnee State University. Hunter led the Bears to a 21-10 record in 2023-24, the first 20-win season in four years, and an appearance in the national tournament. He registered 37 total victories in his two seasons as head coach and won the River States Conference East Division Championship this past season. His 21 wins in his first season are the second-most in program history by a first-year head coach.
Prior to Shawnee State he spent a season at Saint-Mary-Of-The-Woods. His first stint as a head coach came at Lakeland Community College. Hunter led the program from 2019 to 2022 and finished his tenure with a 48-9 overall record as well as an Elite Eight appearance in 2021-22.
Prior to his head coaching time at LCC, he served as an assistant in an initial stint at Shawnee State, along with Urbana College and Goshen.
Hunter was a student-athlete at Columbus State for two seasons before transferring to NCAA Division III Ohio Northern for his final two seasons. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Ohio Northern in 2008 before earning a master’s degree in education from Heidelberg in 2011.
Hunter is joined in Cleveland by his wife Kerrie along with his two daughters, Kendall (age 11) and Mikayla (age 2).

Here’s a recent NBA story from the Associated Press:
CLEVELAND (AP) — Ty Jerome had to wait five years to play in his first NBA playoff game.
On Sunday night, he made the most of the opportunity.
Jerome scored 16 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter, and the Cleveland Cavaliers rolled to a 121-100 victory over the Miami Heat in the first game of the Eastern Conference first-round series.
“Solid. Solid Game 1,” Jerome said.
Jerome had the third-most points in a Cavaliers playoff debut, behind LeBron James and Kyrie Irving.
Coach Kenny Atkinson didn’t expect Jerome to have this type of debut,
“I should (of expected it) because he’s kind of done it all year,” Atkinson said.
Jerome also was the fourth player in franchise history to score at least 28 points coming off the bench.
The game Sunday continued what has been a breakthrough season for Jerome. The 6-foot-5 guard — who helped lead the University of Virginia to an NCAA championship in 2019 — is in his sixth NBA season but played in only two games last season due to a right ankle injury.
Jerome played in a career-best 70 games during the regular season and averaged 12.5 points, also a career high. Before the Cavaliers took the floor, Jerome was named one of the finalists for the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year award.
“Your back’s kind of against the wall. I didn’t really have a huge body of work in the NBA add you kind of have one last shot in a way to make it right,” Jerome said about his mentality going into the season. “I had all that time off to reflect and do mental work and see what was needed to improve on. Confidence and aggression was a thing for me as well, especially.”
Jerome is known as one of the more vocal bench players on the Cavaliers. But on Sunday it was his shooting that did the talking.
He was 10 of 15 from the field, going 5 of 8 on 3-pointers, and had five rebounds and three assists in 28 minutes.
While Jerome’s fourth-quarter shooting — he was 6 of 7 from the field and made all three of his 3-point attempts — was the talk of social media, his teammates were not surprised.
“I mean, this is who he’s been,” said Donovan Mitchell, who has known Jerome since they were both 8 in New York. “It is full circle to come back from being eight years old to my first basketball teammate to now here we are. I know everybody’s gonna react like this is a shock, but he’s been doing this for us all year.”
Atkinson’s favorite play made by Jerome wasn’t a basket. Instead, it was a drive and pass to Jarrett Allen for a layup with 5:47 remaining that gave the Cavaliers a 104-90 lead.
“He got downhill and made that lefty pocket pass to (Allen) for the layup,” Atkinson said. “They went zone and he kind of shot them out of the zone, hitting two 3-pointers. He did it all tonight, and then defensively smart in the right position. He turned the game for us.”
