Masthead Brewing Co. to shift focus, produce ‘beer capsules’

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The way you drink beer – not essentially what you drink – goes to drastically change when Masthead Brewing Co. launches a novel and impressive plan to shift away from brewing “water-based” beer to creating beer capsules, in accordance with the brewery’s Frank Luther.

All of the beers Masthead has on faucet can be obtainable in capsules, nickel-sized disks that customers can drop right into a pint of chilly water similar to one would with an Alka-Seltzer. “It’s a proprietary course of we developed in-house,” he mentioned. “It’s subsequent era.”

Producing beer in capsules has not been accomplished. Luther mentioned two most important causes are motivating the swap: Beer is between 90% and 95% water, and capsule manufacturing will remove the brewery’s utilization. And the financial savings on transport price can be big. Luther added brewer Mike Pelechaty is on board.

Pelechaty has earned a number of awards in competitions, together with within the aggressive and blind-judged Nice American Beer Competition.

Your common beer drinker may not be so fast to undertake the format, however over time it’s seemingly that many in all probability will heat to the thought, similar to customers did with the shift from bottles to cans just a few years in the past.

Something Masthead Brewing Co. makes utilizing the standard “water-based” brewing system could be made for the brand new capsules, in accordance with the brewery.

And, Luther mentioned, the capsule manufacturing not solely “combats the rising tide of transport prices” but it surely additionally offers customers the flexibility “to dose no matter water they need.”

Primarily, Luther confused it’s nonetheless beer, simply in a distinct format. “We’ll nonetheless name it beer. Over the remainder of 2023, we’re going to be phasing out water-based beer manufacturing in favor of capsule-based beer manufacturing.”

Concerning worth, Luther mentioned one capsule, or pill, will price lower than the value of a pint of beer, because the brewery will not be incurring as many manufacturing prices. If profitable, anticipate different breweries to comply with go well with.

Directions can be included as how a lot water can be required for every pill. Chilly, filtered water is preferable.

Positioned at 1261 Superior Ave. in downtown Cleveland, Masthead opened in 2017. The brewery lately had an array of various kinds on faucet, together with Jalapeno IPA, Single Origin Espresso Stout and a Belgian Quad.

Masthead Brewing Co.

Masthead Brewing Co.’s menu won’t change because the brewery plans its beer-production shift. That is the oven that cooks up its array of pizzas.

Firmly entrenched downtown, the brewery covers 16,000 sq. toes. Along with beer, its menu features a full vary of pink and white pizzas plus different dishes.

On how lengthy it could take the brewery to shift to the brand new format, Luther was undecided. However the course of additionally will contain taking out the faucets and far – although not all – of the tools.

Ordering a pill beer on the bar might sound odd, however Luther is assured of us will adapt. And the tablets can be available in shops the place beer is offered. The packaging prospects are limitless; the brewery plans to start out with single packets, “two-fers,” four- and six-packs and 24-tablet instances. However it may create sizes not historically offered – like 5 tablets in a single foil pack. Expiration dates can be printed on the again of the packs.

Like Alka-Seltzer’s outdated promoting jingle from years in the past – “Plop plop, fizz fizz, oh what a reduction it’s”- Masthead might need to launch a advertising marketing campaign to elucidate the radically new course of.

Shifting to tablets would require a further place, and the brewery has employed Sidd Finch, a Harvard-trained cicerone to supervise the method. Finch was touring within the Himalayas and couldn’t be reached for remark.

Masthead Brewing Co.

Masthead Brewing Co. quickly can be divesting itself of a lot of its tools because the brewery shifts to capsule-based beer. These fermenters quickly can be a factor of the previous.

Ingesting a beer made the standard approach vs. a capsule-made brew won’t incur any completely different taste profiles, Luther mentioned. “We labored carefully with our malt suppliers and our hop suppliers to combine their merchandise into our proprietary course of whereas preserving all of the nuance of the uncooked supplies,” he mentioned.

Any customary glassware will work for the capsule-based beer, he added, so long as it’s clear. Luther is happy concerning the change.

“You’re going to like the style, and we’re going to like the financial savings,” he mentioned.
