As we reach middle age, keeping our brains sharp and our emotional wellbeing in good shape becomes especially important. Luckily, there are a number of habits you can incorporate into your daily life in order to prioritize your cognitive and mental health, from starting your day with a brain-healthy breakfast to completing a daily crossword puzzle. And as it turns out, there’s one habit in particular that experts say you should practice every day to boost your memory and mood: getting some exercise.

How exercising improves memory and mood

You likely already know how great getting a bit of exercise (especially first thing in the morning) can be for your body (even for chronic pain). However, did you know it can also make a major difference in your mental, emotional, and cognitive health? That’s right! Moving around is great for your brain, too.

“The best daily habit that comes to my mind for supporting memory and mood is exercise,” Elkins tells us. “Not only is exercise essential for keeping you physically healthy, but it can also be a powerful mindfulness practice that supports memory and mood.”

This is largely due to the fact that getting your body up and moving can actually help detoxify your body and brain. “Exercise helps the body to remove built-up toxins from tissues that may be unfavorable for brain health,” Elkins explains.

Furthermore, exercising can trigger the release of chemicals like serotonin, oxytocin, and dopamine in your brain, all of which can contribute to an overall better mood. “These chemicals are known as ‘feel good’ chemicals, and they are powerful mood enhancers,” Elkins says.

“Exercise releases endorphins, which are known for producing positive feelings and reducing stress,” Hubscher echoes. “It also increases the production of neurotransmitters in your brain that help maintain cognitive functions such as memory, concentration, problem-solving ability and learning efficiency.” Incredible!

Plus, there’s an added bonus if you get your exercise in the great outdoors: “Exercising outdoors offers the added benefit of Vitamin D from sunlight exposure,” Hubscher notes. “Studies show that regular exposure to natural light can also reduce levels of anxiety and depression while improving overall wellbeing. By getting out in nature on a daily basis, you will be giving your brain and body the motivation they need to stay healthy and vibrant throughout your life.”

Overall, finding time to exercise each day is a fantastic habit for so many reasons, including when it comes to keeping your brain sharp and your mood lifted. “Make sure to spend some time out in the open air and reap the rewards of an improved mood and better memory. By doing this every day, you will be well on your way to a healthier and happier life,” Hubscher concludes.
