Bobby Canipe Jr’s ‘GRANDMA’ (2024) – Movie Review – PopHorror

I not very familiar with Shot On Video Horror, only recently being introduced to it through the films of Brewce Longo. My latest foray into SOV horror is Bobby Canipe Jr’s Grandma.

Synopsis

Dive into the blood-soaked nostalgia of ’90s shot-on-video horror with Grandma, Directed by Bobby Canipe Jr.  This terrifying retro tale follows a young woman who inherits a countryside bed-and-breakfast with a chilling secret. The original owner, known only as “Grandma,” was a deranged serial killer (Josh Allman) who transformed her unfortunate guests into gruesome meals. As renovations unfold, the house’s horrific past reawakens, and the new owner (Anna Clary) and her friends (Angel Bradford, Kelsey Baker) must face the grisly return of Grandma’s deadly legacy.

Grandma was written and directed by Bobby Canipe Jr (Amityville Ripper). The film stars Anna Clary (Coffintooth), Angel Bradford (Crackcoon), Kelsey Baker (Red Light District Shark Attack), Ryan Carpenter, Hunter Redfern (Jeffrey’s Hell), Ryan Martel (Bad Girls), Cagney Larkin (Karate Ghost), Bartley Bess, and Josh Allman (Amityville Ripper).

What Worked For Me

I really enjoyed the cast here. Anna Clary, Angel Bradford and Kelsey Baker made the core trio of characters likable and it made me want to root for them. In addition to the core trio, I really enjoyed Ryan Martel and Cagney Larkin as the redneck fruit sellers. Their characters added a lot of humor to their scenes. I also enjoyed Hunter Redfern, who plays a redneck who has a habit of showing up at the B&B the girls are fixing up.

The film kind of feels like a modern gore centered take on Texas Chainsaw Massacre. There was one kill scene in particular that felt like it was directly influenced by a kill from Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The killer, Grandma, was a really unsettling character. Her mannerisms and vocalizations were pretty creepy. The kills are pretty sadistic in nature, with one in particular being incredibly gruesome with a twisted sense of humor.

What Didn’t Work For Me

I would have liked to have a little more backstory on Grandma and her family. It felt like we were given just enough to move the story along and I personally would have liked a little more development. I also wasn’t a big fan of the ending, though that has more to do with my personal preferences.

Final Thoughts

Grandma is a solid shot on video indie slasher film with a great cast and some gruesome kills. Recommended.

Review | The Way We Talk: Chung Suet-ying shines as a deaf woman finding herself

4.5/5 stars

In his six films to date, Hong Kong writer-director Adam Wong Sau-ping has repeatedly revealed a soft spot for protagonists who are trying to understand themselves and find their place in the world.

It was evident from a teenage boy’s discovery of his sexuality in Wong’s debut When Beckham Met Owen; the street-dancing dreams of university students in his breakout hit The Way We Dance; and the struggles of performing artists in navigating Hong Kong’s urban spaces in The Way We Keep Dancing.

But none of those come close to matching the immersive sense of soul-searching he evokes in The Way We Talk, his latest feature. This deeply humane drama about a trio of young deaf people is Wong’s best film yet by some distance.

Stepping into a big debate in deaf culture – the choice between using cochlear implants (surgically implanted electronic devices that improve hearing) or sign language – the film offers an articulate account of a deaf woman’s confusion amid advocation from both sides.

Chung Suet-ying, who was named best actress at the 2024 Golden Horse Awards in Taipei for her part, plays Sophie, a university graduate in actuarial science and the face of an awareness campaign for cochlear implants (CI), for which her mother (Yam Yuen Yee-man) signed her up shortly after she lost her hearing as a toddler.

MOM (2024) – Review | Psychological Horror Movie | Heaven of Horror

Watch MOM on Digital now!

Mom was directed by Adam O’Brien, who previously directed many short films and segments of horror anthologies. It’s based on an original idea by Albert I. Melamed, Nathan Oliver, and Taylor Sardoni.

The story comes from director Adam O’Brien and the screenplay from Philip Kalin-Hajdu (producer of The Sacrifice Game). I’m surprised that no women were involved in creating the story, but it doesn’t show in the movie. In fact, the husband is blamed and blames himself for his lack of action.

If you’re pregnant or want to start a family, you may want to skip this one. It takes a nasty deep dive into the darkest corners of motherhood. I can stomach most things, but this was difficult for me to watch. As it was clearly intended.

One thing is the tragedy you can see coming, the other is a fingernail focus that always gets to me. In several ways, this movie made my skin crawl, which is a compliment for a horror movie. Still, it may not be for everyone to watch this kind of attack on the senses.

With a runtime of 95 minutes, it doesn’t drag on for too long, and the ending even offers a final blow to the gut.

MOM is out on digital in the UK and Ireland from February 17, 2025. It’s already out in the US.
