Ardmore hosts first-ever holiday market
From Delco to Chesco and Montco to Bucks, what about life in Philly’s suburbs do you want WHYY News to cover? Let us know!
Ardmore kicked off its first-ever holiday market Saturday, hosting more than 20 vendors.
Despite the winter chill, holiday shoppers wandered through Schauffele Plaza, perusing everything from candles and pottery to clothing and glassware.
“As an artist, if we didn’t have markets, we wouldn’t be able to actually sell our work,” said Marcia Reiver, a Bryan Mawr-based ceramicist who was selling her pottery, jewelry and other wares at the market Saturday.
“When you buy something from an artist, you’re actually making a big deal,” she said.
In addition to showcasing local artists, the market is designed to boost foot traffic to local businesses, said Alec Hersh, executive director of Ardmore Initiative, the town’s business improvement district.
“There are holiday events elsewhere in the Main Line,” Hersh said. “I wanted to make something happen here in downtown Ardmore that would make it really serve as … that magnetic force for people all across, from West Philly all the way up to Malvern, to come here.”
Grace O’Shea was carrying her toddler while browsing the different stalls. She said she and her family were able to walk just blocks from their home to check out the event.
“It’s great to have proximity to a market like this,” she said. “We are always looking for fun things to do on the weekend, right? And this is something super easy for us.”
Visitors can pick up a passport for the month of December at the market, said Rebecca D’Ostilio, marketing and events manager for Ardmore Initiative.
Once someone gets three stickers from participating businesses with any purchase, they can enter a giveaway for three $100 gift cards.
“That brings the community together, too,” she said. “You feel like you’re participating in shopping small. Which is the point of this, even with the vendors, right, you’re supporting a small business, and I think that’s super important.”

Pennsylvania’s Democratic, Republican senators share friendship
HUNT VALLEY, Md. (TNND) — Pennsylvania Democratic Senator John Fetterman and his Republican colleague, Senator Dave McCormick, emphasized their friendship in a feature article published Thursday.
The lawmakers said in interviews with NOTUS, a political news outlet, that they appreciate each other’s primary interest in representing their politically diverse state.
“We’re very, very good friends, and we get along, and we always try to find ways to work together,” Fetterman said. “Pennsylvania deserves that. And you know, we both realize that we don’t just represent our respective base. We represent all 13 million Pennsylvanians, and that’s why we find ways to work together.”
Fetterman and McCormick have contrasting policy beliefs, although they rarely attack each other’s opinions, as many other members of Congress do. The senators arrived at the Capitol through different paths – Fetterman was a mayor and lieutenant governor while McCormick was a hedge fund executive – but they highlight their respect for each other’s work.
“We look so much different, we have such different backgrounds, we’re from such different parties, we just have so many differences,” McCormick told NOTUS. “But we’re together on the most important thing, which is we trust each other, and we want to do good things for Pennsylvania.”
Bipartisanship, while more common in the Senate than in the House, has become unconventional in Congress. Lawmakers frequently attack each other’s policy opinions and personal characteristics to advance their interests.
On Wednesday, Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz shared a social media post by House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, that accused Democrats of causing a woman’s death by not caring about crime. Democrats have also called Republicans callous for cutting social services in the name of reducing taxes.
Fetterman told NOTUS that he and McCormick have a policy of not “mudslinging” like some of their other colleagues do, a statement the Republican agrees with.
“I think he has very little appetite for, you know, the political nastiness and game playing,” McCormick said.
“I don’t have a lot of appetite for that either. I try to be very respectful, even when I disagree with people, so I give him a lot of credit. He’s been a real role model.”
The senators, under party leadership, are currently negotiating funding for the Department of Homeland Security, which has become a source of division among liberals and conservatives. The department’s ICE, in particular, has sparked intense protests that have received passionate pushback.
Fetterman reportedly described his work with McCormick as a way to bridge the gap for their state’s residents.
“A lot of the noise is coming from people from the extreme or the very deep red or blue states,” the Democrat told NOTUS. “We occupy a space in between where we have to find a way to remember that we are both Pennsylvania’s voice from different parties.”

Owner agrees to euthanize dog 3 months after it attacked 4-year-old neighbor in Chester County
A Chester County woman agreed to have her dog put down on Thursday to settle an attack on her neighbor’s small child that happened back in November of 2025.
“The dogs got out of our neighbor’s house. One ran at the fence and climbed the fence and bolted for my four year old. Knocked him over, grabbed him by the mouth at the top of his arm and shook him across the ground,” Whitley Coggins said.
Coggins told NBC10 that her son is still terrified of his neighbor’s dogs almost three months after he was attacked by one of them.
Chief Brazunas said that this is not the first biting incident this dog was involved in, but this was serious enough to charge the owner.
“This neighborhood has been dealing with issues with the dogs at this residence since 2022,” Downingtown Police Department Chief Brendan Brazunas said.
On Feb. 5, the dog’s owner agreed to have the dog taken to the SPCA to be euthanized which ends the criminal case.
Now, the boy’s family plans to take civil action against the owner.
The family is relieved they no longer have to worry about that specific dog but the neighbor owns three more so they say they’re still not going to feel totally safe when they walk outside their house.
“The both of them scream when we are walking from our front door to the car,” Coggins said. “They ask me and daddy to make sure they have bats and make sure the front door is closed to the neighbor’s house.”
Through her lawyer in court, the owner of the dogs offered an apology to her neighbors.
She still faces other citations for other problems with the other dogs that she owns.
The judge in this case warned the owner to do a better job keeping her dogs under control, but Coggins told NBC10 that doesn’t came her nerves even a little bit.
“I’m gonna leave here and drive to my home and get my kids out of my car and still have to watch her front door. This doesn’t fix our problem, it’s a step in the direction we needed to go in but the dogs need to go,” she said.
