Minimum wage hike to go into effect for some across US
Workers in several states and cities will see minimum wage increases go into effect on January 1, 2025, as they continue to battle with high prices.
U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Missouri) introduced a bill Tuesday with U.S. Sen. Peter Welch (D-Vermont) to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour, making him one of the few Republicans to support the cause.
The bipartisan bill, dubbed the “Higher Wages for American Workers Act,” would raise the minimum wage starting in January 2026 and allow it to increase on the basis of inflation in subsequent years. The current federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, which hasn’t changed since 2009.
“For decades, working Americans have seen their wages flatline,” Hawley said in a statement. “One major culprit of this is the failure of the federal minimum wage to keep up with the economic reality facing hardworking Americans every day. This bipartisan legislation would ensure that workers across America benefit from higher wages”
It is unclear whether the legislation will be taken up for a vote.
An analysis by the Congressional Budget Office in 2024 found that although the earnings and family income of most low-wage workers would increase with a federal minimum wage hike, it would inversely cause other low-income workers to lose their jobs and their family income to fall.
During an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press in December, President Donald Trump said he would “consider” raising the minimum wage but wasn’t sure what that increase should look like.
What is the minimum wage in Missouri?
With the passage of Proposition A in November, Missouri’s minimum wage was bumped to $13.75 an hour for non-tipped employees. Prop A also sets for the minimum wage to increase to $15 an hour in 2026, with adjustments each year after that based on the Consumer Price Index.
But a bill repealing most of Prop A — including future adjustments based on inflation — recently passed both the Missouri House and Senate, with Gov. Mike Kehoe expected to sign the bill into law. If signed, the bill would go into effect on August 28, meaning there wouldn’t be any more adjustments beyond the increase to $15 an hour in 2026.
What is the living wage in Missouri?
A living wage is essentially an estimate of how much a person working full time needs to earn per hour to afford the cost of their household’s minimum basic needs — housing, child care, food, etc. — where they live.
According to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s living wage calculator, the living wage in Missouri for an adult with no children is $20.87 an hour, $37.08 for an adult with one child, $47.26 for an adult with two children and $58.15 for an adult with three children, as of February 2025.

Are federal or Missouri state offices open on Juneteenth?
Given that Juneteenth is a federal holiday, non-essential federal offices will be closed.
It’s also a state holiday in Missouri, so all local governments and state offices will be closed, as well.
Will major retailers be open on Juneteenth?
Most major retailers, grocery stores, warehouse clubs and restaurants should be open on Juneteenth, but you may want to check with your local stores to confirm business hours, as they can vary by location.
Is the post office open on Juneteenth? Will mail be delivered?
All post offices will be closed, and mail will not be delivered on Juneteenth, according to the U.S. Postal Service’s website.
FedEx and UPS will operate more or less as usual, and their stores will be open.
Are banks open on Juneteenth?
Most banks will be closed on Juneteenth, as most follow the Federal Reserve’s holiday schedule.
Is the stock market open on Juneteenth?
Both the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq Stock Market will be closed on Juneteenth.

Trash pickup on Juneteenth varies from city to city, so it’s best to check with your local waste management service to see whether they observe the holiday.
Trash pickup can be delayed by one day if the scheduled pickup falls on a federal holiday.
Columbia will have normal trash pickup on Friday, according to the city’s website. Each hauler in Springfield sets its own holiday schedule. Ozark Refuse, Republic Services and Waste Management are not delayed for the holiday.
Are libraries and DMV offices open on Juneteenth?
Holiday hours can vary among Missouri’s libraries, so it’s best to check whether the ones in your area will be open on Juneteenth.
The Daniel Boone Regional Library network in Columbia and Springfield-Greene County Library District branches will be closed.
All Missouri Department of Revenue offices will be closed on Juneteenth, including driver examination stations. With that being said, some license offices will be operating during the holiday, so check the Missouri License Office Locator to see if your local office is open.
PETTIS COUNTY, Mo. (KCTV) – A Sedalia man is dead and a woman is recovering after a single-vehicle crash, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Troopers say the crash happened around 11:20 p.m. on Tuesday, June 16, near the intersection of Route M and Whiteman Rd.
Investigators add that a 2018 Dodge Challenger, driven by a 30-year-old Sedalia man, was traveling north on the highway when it veered off the right side of the road.
MSHP notes that the vehicle struck a tree and a fence before rolling over.
First responders say they pronounced the driver dead at the scene around 11:55 p.m. He was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Authorities indicate that a 26-year-old female passenger, also from Sedalia, suffered minor injuries and was transported to Bothwell Regional Health Center. She was not wearing a seatbelt.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. No further information has been released.
