Thanks to dark magic, Like a Dragon developer RGG Studios manages to pump out a fully fledged game every six months and they are all bangers. Even Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name is a decent game despite being one of the lesser Like a Dragon games. It is part of the mainline series, but the important part of LADG: TMWEHN – a name too long even as an acronym – is the G, Gaiden.

Gaiden games are go-betweens that bridge the gap from one numbered game to the next. They give you more context on the characters and story, but are mostly there as fan service. Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii doesn’t say Gaiden in the English title, but it does in the Japanese. In the last Gaiden game, we were treated to secret agent Kazuma Kiryu, and now we meet pirate captain Goro Majima.

When I attended a two-hour preview session in the entirely impractical setting of Sir Francis Drake’s The Golden Hinde, I had the opportunity to talk to Hiroyuki Sakamoto, chief producer of the Like a Dragon series. When I ask why Mad Dog Majima has lost his memories, washed up in Hawaii and suddenly decided to become a pirate the response is: “Just don’t worry about it. It’s Majima.” This statement seems to be the driving force behind the game.

Despite Sakamoto-san informing us that the events of Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii are canon and will bridge the gap between Infinite Wealth and the next Like a Dragon game, we’re not so sure that it’s anything but a fever dream. Set six months after the end of Infinite Wealth, Majima washes up in Hawaii with no memories – just don’t worry about it – and after meeting some real-life pirates – just don’t worry about it – decides to become one himself. Through his journey, he grabs a boat and assembles a crew before learning how to play instruments that summon sharks and jellyfish – just another thing you shouldn’t fret over.

Two hours is a hearty preview session, and despite this, it was all gameplay-focused with little story. RGG Studios has kept tight-lipped about major returning characters so it’s likely that we were shielded from learning too much about the important beats before the game is released. From a gameplay perspective, Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii leans fully into the series’ wacky side, but Sakamoto-san promised there are still the touching character moments that players love.

We do know that Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii reuses the Honolulu and Nele Island maps from Infinite Wealth, and also adds three smaller islands including Madlantis, this game’s version of the Castle from the last Gaiden game. You have to plot a course to sail the seas between the islands, and you can also dock at tiny treasure islands along the way to look for booty.

A lot has changed since my first Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii preview shortly after the game was announced. At that time I was underwhelmed by Majima’s Sea Dog-style combat, which was slower but more powerful than his fast-paced Mad Dog-style. Sea Dog style has seen big improvements and fits better with the feel of Majima’s infamous approach to combat, while still having a stronger, more piratesque flair. Summoning dark gods via instruments is fun even if they don’t contribute the most to battle.

This preview was the first time I took the helm of the good ship Goromaru. There are plenty of customization options for your boat and they are more than just cosmetic. The ship’s bow features two machine guns and there are canons on port and starboard. You can swap these so they shoot lasers, coconuts, fire, and more. These are for taking out other pirate ships in naval battles, though they shouldn’t pose too many problems out on the open waters. Your ship moves slowly, but you can use your boost and speed away from scary situations.

Pirate ships are the least of your concerns. The weather around Hawaii is particularly tumultuous and you’ll have to dodge lightning strikes, whirlpools, and breaching whales if you want to make your way safely. I assume this is to keep things spicy given the slow movement of the boat, but they are easy enough to avoid. The Goromaru is intuitive to control but you won’t be doing any Tokyo-style drifts in the cumbersome vessel.

Much like the last Gaiden game, Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii puts a strong emphasis on Coliseum fights, and these will make up a large part of people’s full completion of the game. There are four types of Coliseum battles. Quick Clash is one naval battle followed by a deck battle, which is your standard Coliseum fight except you’re standing on a boat. Tournament of Captains strings two or three of these together with no healing between rounds.

The other two types of Pirate Coliseum fights are the same as they are in other games. Madlantis Mania is several deck battles in a row, while Swashbuckler Showdown throws the boat out entirely, and asks a hundred or so people to go at it on a beach. It’s exactly what you’d expect from Like a Dragon Coliseum battles if you could also bring a boat sometimes.

Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is set to be of similar quality to the last Gaiden game. It has well-thought-out combat styles and a large section of the game is dedicated to having fun with them. I’m excited to see the tantalizing tidbits of story RGG Studios has in store for us, and there were hints of something a bit deeper beneath the surface. However, if Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii just ends up as little more than a swashbuckling adventure with Majima at the helm then that’s quite alright with me too. I’m not worried about it. It’s Majima.

HONOLULU — Photographs of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. adorned with flower lei from Hawaii residents who traveled to Selma, Alabama, to join him on a pivotal Civil Rights march went on public display Tuesday in the state Capitol in Honolulu.

The Selma-to-Montgomery marches galvanized passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which did away with most barriers such as poll taxes and other forms of voter discrimination targeting Black Americans in the Deep South.

A delegation of five people brought dozens of flower lei with them from Hawaii to Alabama in March 1965. Images of King wearing lei, garlands that are synonymous with Hawaiian culture, have been previously published — but most of the photos displayed in Hawaii’s new exhibit have never been seen before. Some photos have subtle variations, while others include figures who may have been deemed unimportant at the time. The exhibit runs through July 7.

One of the lei-bearers was Charles Campbell, a high school teacher and chairman of the Hawaii Civil Rights Conference, who a March 20, 1965 article in The Honolulu Advertiser quoted as saying: “Selma has the capability of becoming a real sore that could affect the entire nation.”

King was photographed wearing lei about two weeks after the event known as Bloody Sunday when state troopers violently attacked Civil Rights marchers on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma on March 7, 1965.

The photos were taken by Civil Rights photographer Matt Herron, whose widow donated them to Hawaii’s Department of Accounting and General Services for the state’s archives.

After the photos were unveiled, Steven Springel stared at a photo of his mother, Nona Ferdon, who was a divorced mother of two children and a graduate student when she traveled to Selma.

Springel remembers he was just about to turn 7 and only realized as an adult how important her trip was. Growing up in Hawaii, “we never experienced segregation or racial inequality,” he said of his and his sister’s childhood. Ferdon died in 2021.

The exhibit, part of Hawaii’s programming to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States, is a reminder people from the Aloha State participated in an important event in history, said Keith Regan, who oversees the department as the state’s comptroller and presided over the photo unveiling as acting governor while Gov. Josh Green is out of state.

The small delegation traveled thousands of miles “to be a part of the Civil Rights movement, to show ‘aloha’ to the world that Hawaii was there holding hands with our fellow brothers and sisters to ensure equality and justice were heard throughout the nation,” he said.

The Hawaii members also wore lei during first day of the 50-mile (80.46-kilometer) march. Mothers of Kawaiahaʻo Church in Honolulu strung together fragrant plumeria plucked from church grounds to assemble the lei.

Giving lei, a word that is both singular and plural in the Hawaiian language, continues to be a way to share the “aloha” spirit. People in Hawaii give and receive lei for all kinds of reasons, including to celebrate birthdays and promotions, or to show appreciation or recognition.

Tomi Knaefler, who had traveled with the delegation as a reporter with the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, planned to attend Tuesday’s news conference. But at 96 years old, she wasn’t feeling up to it, said her daughter, Pamela MacDonald, who did attend.

MacDonald said she was 14 when her mother went on the assignment, “the one that she holds dearest to her heart.”

The exhibit comes at the end of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2026 term, which included a ruling gutting the remaining piece of the Voting Rights Act, setting off a wave of partisan gerrymandering in states in the South and endangering generations of gains in Black political representation.

Two years after the
Hawaii Supreme Court ruled that the access road to the Maunakea summit had been illegally seized and designated as state property in 2018 by the state Department of Transportation, plans to manage it going forward are under discussion.

The state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, which the court determined is the rightful manager of the land on which a four-mile stretch of the road is located, has received several proposals for projects on the road and surrounding area.

The ideas include installation of a toll booth and charging for access to the summit, construction of a gift shop and cultural center, operation of educational tours, and environmental restoration efforts, among others.

The Maunakea Stewardship and Oversight Authority — the state agency tasked with taking over management of the summit region from the University of Hawaii — earlier this month discussed partnering with DHHL and other groups to help determine the best path forward.

“Early indications are that there will be a working group comprised of the authority, (the Center for Maunakea Stewardship, the Department of Land and Natural Resources), DHHL and other immediate stakeholders who can look at what the potential would be on a holistic comprehensive basis,” MKSOA Executive
Director John De Fries said. “And in the meantime, DHHL is obligated to continue in the process of reviewing the proposals that they have
received.”

DHHL planning office staff members have presented two proposals and preliminary feedback before the Hawaiian Homes Commission meeting. Both proposals came from DHHL beneficiaries in the form of land-use requests under DHHL’s Aina Mauna Legacy Program, which was developed to oversee the trust’s lands surrounding Maunakea.

One of the proposals was submitted by the Waimea Hawaiian Homesteaders Association, also known as Waimea Nui. The group’s proposal includes building a cultural center, having trained cultural stewards on site and community and youth development opportunities. It would be funded in part by an access fee, but the presentation did not include cost or revenue estimates.

The other proposal is from Koa Kia‘i, a Native Hawaiian group led by Kalani­akea Wilson, a local tour company operator. It suggests installing a toll booth, parking lot, bathrooms, gift shop, playground, workout area and food truck along the access road, as well as operating astronomy, cultural and environmental tours. The proposal also includes cultural monitoring and ecological restoration measures.

The applicants estimate a cost of $1.5 million to implement the proposal, and a revenue of $1.75 million from the toll and parking fees in the first year of
operation.

A survey of DHHL beneficiaries suggested preference for the Waimea Nui plan, but respondents also expressed desire for the two organizations to find a way to work together.

While it will ultimately be up to DHHL to make a decision, MKSOA Board Chair John Komeiji said the authority could serve in an advisory capacity and help align the proposals with broader management plans for the mauna.

“They have to make the decision. There are two beneficiary groups that are making the proposals, so they are … duty-bound to consider both proposals,” he said during the June 18 board meeting. “But I think our job is to figure out, give them an overall holistic view of what is occurring now, how that might interface with whatever proposal.”

A notable piece of living history has been removed from Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort after reportedly dying from recent cold weather.

The Polynesian Resort’s one-of-a-kind kukui nut tree was cut down in late June after Disney horticulturalists determined the tree could no longer survive in the wake of a uniquely difficult Florida winter.

The large tropical tree was located to the rear of the Great Ceremonial House, just off a guest footpath. According to a 2020 Forestry Journal feature, it was believed to be the only tree of its kind in mainland North America.

The tree, Aleurites moluccana, was donated to Disney by the people of Hawaiʻi and planted at the resort on April 5, 1997, the 25th anniversary of the opening of Magic Kingdom.

The kukui tree carried particular significance as the state tree of Hawaiʻi from 1959 forward, and it is still regarded as an important cultural symbol of the state. The tree at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort had been transplanted directly from Hawaiʻi, with a time capsule reportedly placed in the soil around its roots and base when it was planted.

In accordance with a traditional Hawaiian custom, according to the Forestry Journal piece, the kukui tree was planted behind the Great Ceremonial House rather than at the front, and it was deliberately planted by one lucky hotel guest, rather than a Cast Member. The article explained that this reflected a Hawaiian belief that kukui trees should be planted toward the rear, or “hale,” of a home and by a stranger to bring good luck.

In our photos, crews are seen working in the landscaped area near the resort’s longhouses and the Lava Pool. Orange cones and barricades block off portions of the walkway, with a utility vehicle and equipment nearby. The tree had been cut down, with a tall remaining trunk section visible where the kukui tree once stood.

At Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, the tree helped support the resort’s South Pacific placemaking. The tree’s distinct light green, silvery leaves, striking trunk, and small green fruits stood out against native Florida trees and even other tropical trees planted at the resort.

For much of the kikui’s tree life, a Moreton Bay fig tree grew nearby on the opposite side of an adjacent footpath, another transplant tree which itself was removed some time around 2022.

The Facebook group Tikiman’s Unofficial Polynesian Resort Pages made a post regarding the tree’s removal, detailing that the recent unusual cold weather at the resort was too much to bear.

The tree had, however, a history of surviving violent Florida weather. A Disney Resort Team member told Forestry Journal that the kukui tree had been struck by lightning twice, survived hurricanes, nearly been uprooted, and endured prior cold snaps before this latest reported decline.

It is not currently known whether Disney plans to replace the kukui tree, or whether the reported time capsule at its base was removed, returned to the ground, or preserved elsewhere. We will keep you updated
