A traveler took to social media to ask whether passengers could purchase an additional airplane seat next to them.

Posted in the “r/SouthwestAirlines” forum, the user’s comment said, “People keep ‘saving’ the seat next to them because they don’t want anyone to sit there. Is it technically possible to buy another seat, not customer of size, just so you don’t have to sit next to someone[?]”

The user went on, “Maybe people buying an extra seat will stop the purses, jackets, blankets, etc. on the seat next to someone?”

FLIGHT PASSENGER WARNS TRAVELERS TO ‘ALWAYS SCREENSHOT YOUR BOARDING PASS’: HERE’S WHY

Fellow Redditors took to the comments section to share their thoughts about purchasing an extra seat.

“You cannot have two tickets in your name,” one user wrote.

“One will be automatically canceled before your flight,” the person added.

‘SEAT SQUATTERS’ ON PLANES ARE LATEST TRAVEL TREND TAKING OVER SOCIAL MEDIA

“Take up a musical instrument, one too large for the overhead but not too large for the seat. You’ll still have someone sitting next to you on one side, but your instrument will get a nice view from its window seat,” a user advised.

Social media users weighed in on whether a flyer can purchase an additional seat.  (iStock)

One user said, “No, you can not do that on most airlines. Only if you actually need 2 seats.”

Another added, “Nope. With it being open seating. You’re getting someone [sitting] next to you.”

Southwest Airlines has an open-air policy allowing passengers to select their own seats upon boarding based on the assigned group.

“Customers who encroach upon any part of the neighboring seat(s) may proactively purchase the needed number of seats prior to travel to ensure the additional seat(s) is available,” it says.

It also says, “Southwest will refund the extra seat purchased upon request. After travel is complete, please request your refund.”

The site does not define the requirements to be considered a customer of size.

Southwest announced this year that it will be launching an assigned seating model.

“We will begin selling flights with seat assignments in the second half of 2025 for travel in the first half of 2026,” the airline’s site states under the “What’s New” page.

American Airlines’ website includes a section for customers interested in “extra space during travel.”

“If you need more than one seat to travel comfortably and safely, you must book an additional seat by calling Reservations. Please inform us of your seating needs when booking your trip,” the airline’s site states.

Delta Air Lines also offers information about purchasing an extra seat.

“A customer may purchase an extra seat for each flight in the itinerary,” Delta’s website says.

“The seat will be sold at the same fare when purchased at the same time.”

“Customers who do not purchase the extra seat in advance risk the need to change seat assignments to another location on the aircraft that provides additional space. In the event of a full flight, customers will be rebooked for a later flight with available seating,” the site continued.

Whataburger revives iconic A-frame design at new Texas restaurants

Whataburger revives iconic A-frame design at new Texas restaurants

Aiming for a modern-yet-retro look, Whataburger is reviving its iconic A-frame. Sort of.

The Texas burger chain is introducing two new prototype store designs, each of which is “grounded in the brand’s heritage but built for how [customers] experience Whataburger today,” the company says. The designs will be incorporated into newly built locations.

One of the prototypes, called The Legacy, reintroduces the classic A-frame shape, but with a modern twist, on the exterior of a 3,000-square-foot store and enlarges the dining room, the company says. The new A-frame treatment maintains “the unmistakable Whataburger look with bold architectural updates,” says the burger chain, but it takes up far less space than the original version.

The other prototype, called The Essential, leans into the iconic orange-and-white striped scheme on the exterior of a 2,000-square-foot restaurant.

In 2020, Whataburger debuted its first refreshed store in South San Antonio, de-emphasizing the familiar A-frame, adding more glass around the front of the building, updating the décor, and retooling the kitchen. In the six years since, most of Whataburger’s original A-frame-adorned “flying W” stores have switched to new formats, and all newly built locations have incorporated modern designs.

Among other changes coming to new Whataburger restaurants are:

  • Warmer spaces featuring natural wood tones, more glass, and modern materials to “create a more open, welcoming environment.”
  • Updated layouts with flexible seating and dedicated areas for mobile orders and third-party order pickups.

“The result is a space that feels like Whataburger from the moment you pull in, with a few thoughtful updates to make every visit even better. It’s all about honoring the brand’s roots while making room for what’s next,” the company says.

The new prototypes will debut in Texas and then be rolled out in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Construction is set to start later this year, and store openings are expected in early 2027.

Whataburger, founded in 1950 in Corpus Christi, operates more than 1,100 restaurants in 17 states, with the bulk of them in Texas.

Ai’King Hall’s Recruiting Flip to Miami Signals Concerning Oregon Trend

Ai’King Hall’s Recruiting Flip to Miami Signals Concerning Oregon Trend

The Miami Hurricanes have become a pain for the Oregon Ducks on the recruiting trail as of late. Former Oregon coach Mario Cristobal’s Hurricanes have stolen another recruit from Dan Lanning’s Ducks as both teams enter the 2026 college football season as national championship contenders.

2027 four-star cornerback Ai’King Hall, originally a Ducks commit, flipped his commitment to Miami on Sunday afternoon. Hall is rated as the No. 73 overall player nationally and the No. 9-ranked cornerback, per 247Sports. Hall was committed to the Ducks since April 6 before flipping his commitment to the Hurricanes.

Oregon Ducks’ Other Recruiting Losses to Miami Hurricanes

In addition to flipping Hall, Miami also poached former Georgia five-star cornerback Donte Wright, whom the Ducks were pushing hard to flip. Wright committed to Miami over Oregon on May 9 and is a big loss for the Ducks, even more so than Hall, as he is among the top-ranked players in the 2027 recruiting class.

Per 247Sports, Wright is ranked as the No. 9 overall player nationally in the 2027 class and No. 1 in California. Wright is expected to be a key contributor on defense and for Cristobal’s effort to lead Miami to their first national championship since 2001.

This past season, the Hurricanes fell 27-21 to the Indiana Hoosiers in the national championship. Despite the loss, Miami is expected to be one of the top college football contenders in the future, along with Oregon.

While this pair of recruits won’t arrive in South Beach until the 2027 season, Miami and Oregon could very well face off in this year’s national championship at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.

With the losses of both Hall and Wright from Oregon’s 2027 recruiting class, the Ducks now have one cornerback commit for the 2027 cycle, four-star cornerback Josiah Molden, a native of nearby West Linn, Oregon.

Molden has the potential to be a top future talent for the Ducks’ secondary as he is ranked the No. 27 overall cornerback and the No. 1 player in Oregon, per 247Sports. Following the two losses, Oregon’s 2027 recruiting ranking remains inside the top 10, despite Lanning not having a five-star commit for the cycle.

Having both Hall and Wright in Oregon’s secondary would’ve been massive for Oregon’s defense, but for now, Lanning will have to work with what he has, while continuing to pursue other top recruits.

With the loss of Hall, Oregon’s 2027 recruiting ranking dropped slightly to No. 10 overall, per On3 and 247Sports. Before Hall decided to flip his commitment to Miami, the Ducks’ 2027 recruiting ranking was No. 9 overall, per On3 and No. 7 per 247Sports.

Despite the losses, there is still plenty of time for Oregon to improve its 2027 recruiting class ranking, the main focus for the Ducks as of now, with the return of star quarterback Dante Moore, is winning the team’s first national championship in program history.

This is an accomplishment that Oregon fans are desperate for, as Lanning has made an all-out effort for the Ducks to achieve that goal as they enter what some see as a national championship or bust 2026 season.
