Dolphins waive quarterback Skylar Thompson, activate wide receiver Grant DuBose off injured reserve

Saturday marked the end of the Skylar Thompson era for the Miami Dolphins. The franchise released the third-year quarterback in a wave of roster moves ahead of Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans.

The franchise signed practice defensive tackle Matt Dickerson to the active roster and activated wide receiver Grant DuBose off injured reserve. Tackle Ryan Hayes and long snapper Zach Triner were also elevated to the active roster for Sunday’s game.

Thompson appeared in 10 games during his three years in Miami, completing 81 of 138 pass attempts with one passing touchdown. He completed 21 of 33 pass attempts for only 187 yards in three appearances this season. With depth issues elsewhere, the Dolphins proceed with Tyler Huntley as backup quarterback, but Thompson could land on the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Dickerson’s career began with the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent in 2018 and he signed to the Dolphins practice squad on Oct. 25, 2024. He logged 15 tackles across 12 appearances with the Kansas City Chiefs last season but has yet to see the field this year.

DuBose caught one of three targets this season and suffered a shoulder injury in Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills. A 2023 seventh-round pick by the Green Bay Packers, the Dolphins hope DuBose can also help improve one of the NFL’s worst special teams units.

Players can only be elevated from the practice squad three times, and Sunday marks the third time Triner will be called up for game day. Since starting Blake Ferguson has fully practiced back-to-back weeks, Miami may be leveraging the roster spot elsewhere with Triner available.

With starting left tackle Terron Armstead doubtful, elevating Hayes was to be expected. Miami’s depth in the trenches will be tested especially against a defense anchored by Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson Jr.

Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra: “Regardless of the scheme is, I always go back to that, it’s just about committing to doing hard things. We were really moving in the zone, taking away airspace and scrambling to challenge shots at the rim. In a lot of these losses in the last month we’ve just been giving up shots at the rim and threes.”
