Miracle Hot Springs shuts down 'indefinitely' following 2 deaths
Sequoia National Forest’s Miracle Hot Springs closed indefinitely Monday after the second death in two years, according to U.S. Forest Service officials.
A person was found dead on February 17 in one of the Miracle Hot Springs tubs, with another deceased individual found in the same area in October 2022.
The manner of death was not disclosed.

“Public safety is of utmost importance to Forest Service officials. With a second death that can be attributed in part to the hot springs, the area will remain closed until a sustainable long-term solution is reached,” District Ranger Al Watson said in a statement released.

The statement said that an area closure order would block access to the hot springs, tubs, and general vicinity.

Sandy Flat Campground, near the Miracle Hot Springs day use area, would remain open to the public and would continue accepting reservations.

Fiesta Subaru donated $58,000 to Watermelon Mountain Ranch Animal Shelter, helping New Mexico’s largest no-kill animal rescue pay for food and medical care.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Fiesta Subaru donated $58,000 to Watermelon Mountain Ranch Animal Shelter, helping New Mexico’s largest no-kill animal rescue pay for food and medical care.
Fiesta Subaru has helped hundreds of dogs find permanent homes over the years. The dealership sets aside part of its sales and then delivered one check for $58,000 to Watermelon Mountain Ranch Animal Shelter.
“Whenever someone is looking for a dog and they go to one of these facilities it really does go a long way,” said Derek Culach, president of Fiesta Auto Group. “These funds that we are setting aside to give to them for the food for the medical bills everything else these dogs need to find a home that’s healthy and everything that goes a long with that.”
The event brought together people who love pets to celebrate the donation and support the shelter’s work through the year.
People brought their dogs to play games and some also had a chance to meet a possible new pet.
Oakridge has been recognized as one of the top U.S. destinations for mountain bikers.
The 3,200-person city in the Cascade Range was ranked fifth on Outside Magazine’s list of the country’s best mountain biking towns, placing it in a category that includes places like Moab, Utah; Bentonville, Ark. and Durango, Colo.
The ranking cited the city’s more than 300 miles of trails into the Umpqua and Willamette national forests that surround it, and a vibe that is “timber town transitioned to tourism.”
Eugene Cathcart, part-owner of Willamette Mountain Mercantile, a bike shop in Oakridge, said the area has a hub and spoke layout.
“There’s all of these trails that act like spokes going out into the wilderness around us here, and they’re long,” he said. “A lot of them run through old-growth forest, and they have a really fun, playful character that works really well for mountain biking.”
Outside Magazine cited Oakridge as a prime location for enduro riding, a style of riding that often includes courses with steep terrain and challenging downhills.
“The combination of riding in steep, wooded areas and some of the technical features like roots and rocks make a lot of our trails not too beginner-friendly,” Cathcart said. “Some of our trails are accessible to beginners and range all the way up to quite challenging.”
Oakridge has adopted mountain bike tourism as part of its economy, with multiple companies offering guided tours and shuttle services for those who don’t want to take on long climbs to get to the downhills.
