Richland Co. Sheriff warns of increase in cryptocurrency scams
MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – The Richland County sheriff is reporting an increase in cryptocurrency scams.
Sheriff Clay Porter explained Wednesday that the Sheriff’s Office wanted to educate those who are less familiar with cryptocurrency to prevent scams from happening.
Porter defined cryptocurrency as a digital and/or virtual currency with records maintained in a decentralized system, such as Bitcoin. These scams could include blackmail, extortion, fake job listings, giveaways and more.
Those who believe they are experiencing a cryptocurrency scam should think about if it seems too good to be true, includes a “pay to play” job, or a promise of guaranteed investment returns. These scams can also include unexpected emails, phone calls and text messages.
